I think, but I'm not sure, that this forum opened for business on March 2, 2011, around noon. So there can be no posts that are four years old. Venus Petrov may not have been the first to post here, but she was close, and I just necroposted to her thread. Daisy Morrisey necro'd to another OP that's just a few hours later. So we're neck and neck.

I look foward to someone necroposting to a thread older than Venus', because I want to know I'm not the only one stupid enough to put time into things like this.

;-).

In SL, I do not really worry about who the RL person is, I try to take them for who they present, just as I want to be.  When I want RL, I log off.

Back before SL, though, I had a number of on-line relationships where I was presenting exactly who I am and they supposedly were as well, and like you it was important to me that they were.

The way I handled it was to invent a character in my head.  His name was Denis and he was 53 year-old postman in Dunstable,  England who lives with his mum and is completely unremarkable in any way except one: he has a remarkable talent for pretending he is a woman on-line.  So every time I started chatting with someone, I would start with the assumption that "she" was Denis until she convinced me otherwise.

You know.  Not right away, but if you are cleaver, you eventually know.  It just takes a few weeks or months.

There is a smell to truth if you are looking for it.  Truth is weird and full and messy and not the way you want it, but it still adds up.  Lies are clean, tidy, and too good to be true, and yet little things just do not add up. Listen to your gut, but you need to tell your gut to actively listen.

And real women simply interact differently than Denis thinks they do.  Denis actually is usually not as smart as he thinks he is so he ends up getting careless.

If has a ***** it is male, if it doesn't then it's female....... very basic answer but in SL that's all you need.

Actually I have met guys who didn't have one yet, which works just fine if they keep their pants on.

Holy necro, batman!

I've a little story to tell on this topic. Years and years ago I was hanging out with a friend on a beach in a gay sim, where there had been some speculation/rumours that some of the guys were actually straight girls with male avatars (because yaoi, I guess). Anyway, there we were sitting round the campfire and somehow the conversation turned to crude fart & poop jokes. And I sent an IM to my friend;  "Nope. They're real blokes".

Seriously though, there's no way to tell, short of going to their house and breaking in whilst they're in the shower.  Therefore the best plan of action is to treat them as whatever gender their avatar is.

What's the difference between a fridge and a-- Wait, can we make these jokes now or will people be butthurt? Social convention these days is like a jungle.

... I'm not really a terrible person, I swear. My laughter may be slightly maniacal, but it's still laughing, right?

And I've seen the opposite on Flickr. All over. I should probably manage my groups.

Why would I -want- to tell the difference?

This is Second Life, not Match.Com or Tindr....

Each to their own thing - but if I was looking to mate - I’d use a better mate-finding Service than SL (or maybe go to bars)

Ever been to a club and there's like 12 avatars, 9 are female avs, 3 are male ?  Its reasonable to assume several are males using female avatars. Because in SL, just as in RL, the split in genders is generally speaking 50 percent. Am I wrong ? Would'nt be the first time.

Oh that's one of my favorite  pieces of "EVERYONE knows" garbage in the "how to find real females in SL" threads...

Don't you know, a lot of people don't have mics and webcams attached to their PC's, hell as a general rule, desktops do not come fitted as standard with cameras.

And a lot of people can't be bothered wasting money on mics and cams either, since they have no use for them.

Not to mention the bad connections that won't allow some of us to use them at all even if they wanted to...

They can't really call themselves gamers. Doesn't take much to get a cheap mic or cam just saying ;)

Wow you're on a roll here, another CLASSIC piece of garbage from this thread genre...

1. Who said they "call themselves real gamers"

2. Who said you need a mic or cam to play a damn game anyway

3. The cost is irrelevant, you are saying they MUST spend their money on stuff they don't want or need or else you will swagger around accusing them of not being "real gamers" or "female"

Yeah... It shows, no mic or cam needed... ;)

There are lots of reasons not to voice besides trying to hide, some people have speech issues they come here to escape from, some might want to avoid any emotional attachment with anyone here and believe that not hearing the persons voice is a good way to do that.

How about you stop writting garbage? I have a desk top and a laptop both have built in mic/cam functions.. but hey i am just another IT Tech i would know nothing i guess love. Most people on sl gamer chicks or gamer guys venture other gaming world too. Dear you can see how long i have been on sl. I know what i am talking about. ;) the whole point of thread is how to tell the difference.. not to write garbage to cover up your gender or be defensive dear.

Not saying they must so before you jump the gun, sweet stop putting words in my mouth i have not said. I said its a way to check.

Not hard to see who is a girl and guy by how they act and ava style. But i guess being in sl 11+yrs gives me that experience to tell difference on it considering i have seen women on men ava and men on women ava. There choice. Just don't be shady and have something to hide. Be out an open.

Quote me all you like on me being a Scouser :) you probably can't grasp what pride is for where you come from :P

When you tossed “game” into the discussion, you also sort of defined part of the issue; SL is not the same thing to everyone.

For some, SL is a Game. After they get used to the fact that we have no leveling system, Godmode or Raid system - they find other ways to have fun (or move on to more “gamey” games).

For people like me, SL is a virtual world that lets me be mistaken for a fully-functional human-being and to exercise my creativity (building, literary role playing, etc).

For others, it’s the Dating Game where they look for a RL mate inside a virtual world.

For still others, it’s cheap porn, a social network or Griefer Heaven....

It just depends on what you’re here for.

So how do you know who someone really is and what they’re here for?

You ask them.

If they don’t mute you for being pushy about their privacy; you might just make a  friend......
