How do I get a custom forum avatar?

Check out Torley's video on this page.  You can jump right to 4:40 in to get right to the walk-through on changing your profile/avatar pic.  In a nutshell, click on your name up at the top of the browser window, then add images using the link on the right side of that page.

Otr look here on uploading an image to your profile to be used here as your Avatar.

To change your avatar go to 'My Settings' (top right on the black bar) and then go to the 'Avatars' tab. Now choose 'from uploaded images' and choose the uploaded image you want to use.

If you need to upload images go to your profile (click your name top right) the go to view your images on the right of you profile. You can upload images from there and then select them back in the avatar preferences.

You can also play around with the backhroup of your 'badge' as I ahve been doing too. To do this go to 'My Settings'  and then 'Social Connect' (getting the image size right for the background is a bit difficult though!)

Your name is nearly illegible owing to being a dark color on a dark background. Is that an intended effect?
