can someone please explain the age verification/age of account thing for adult content? im confused as to how this works.

I just started yesterday...does this mean i have to wait 18 years to access certain stuff? (just kidding).

There is no special age verification.  Because you entered your correct birthdate when you registered for a SL account, Linden Lab calculates your RL age from that.  You still need to state your own access preference within SL, but you are already "verified".  If you want to be able to visit places in SL that are rated Adult, you must check that preference in Preferences >>> General.  If you want to be able to search for Adult-rated places and i8tems in world, choose that option in the uper left corner of Search.  If you want to be able to view and buy Adult-rated things in Marketplace, use the dropdown menu at the top center of the Marketplace screen.

Oh, and ... even when you have done that, you will find that landowners in adult-rated areas may still deny you entry for the first 30 days or so that you are in SL.  That is within their right, and it's nothing personal.  That's a standard way of keeping griefers out.  A lot of them get bored (or banned) within a month.
