names above our heads

I noticed latetly many have added nick names and such to their names above their heads and I was wondering how to do that.

I'm guessing you might be referring to Display Names??  With a viewer that supports Display Names you can now view 3 items above an avatar's head if you wish;  Group Title, Display Name and Username.  Name tag options can be changed in the Preference - General tab window.

To create a Display name (using V2.4 as an example) go to your profile, choose Edit Profile and then click on the tool icon next to your name.
