The problem may be because you haven't removed an alpha attached to the neck, skull or mouth (somewhere around that area). I would remove all alphas one by one, to see which one has caused the problem. I'm not exactly the most experienced with SL, so sorry if this answer isn't useful.

An alpha "halo"?   Alpha is a measure of transparency, so it you mean that you seem to have a sort of semi-transparent object attached to you, that could be your "halo". If it's something glowing, like an angelic halo, then it's not alpha but a glow setting in something you are wearing.  It might help to see a photo of what you mean, but in either case it's something that you are wearing.  It sounds very much like a simple face light, in fact.  Highlight transparent objects around you by typing CTRL + Alt + T.  If it's a face light or something like that, you'll probably see a red sphere near your head.  Right click on it and select Detach to remove it.  If you don't see a face light, it may still be inside you (as  creepy as that sounds).  Maybe it was once part of some jewelry that you have since detached.  You can look for items you are wearing by opening inventory and typing (WORN -- without the right parenthesis -- to get a full list.
