This limited-time discount offer is available only for memberships on the Quarterly billing plan. Discount will be applied to the first quarterly billing cycle only, and all future charges will be at the regular Premium price; price will return to USD 22.50, excluding VAT where applicable. To qualify, Second Life members must have an active Basic account or create a new Second Life account. Discount offer begins on Wednesday the 15th of October at 08:00 am Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) and expires on Monday the 3rd of November 2014 at 08:00 am Pacific Standard Time (PST).

The special offer is over, but your friend should not feel bad.

For one thing, unless you are SURE you want to be Premium, it's best to try it for a month or two on the monthly plan.  If you sign up for a longer period, you get a lower price, but you don't get a refund of any unused time if you decide you want to downgrade partway through your membership period.

Also, even though the 1/2 off offer saves you money for the first quarter, the price goes back to the full rate for subsequent quarters.  Assuming you remain Premium for a year, the annual rate of $72 per year is still cheaper than the quarterly plan, even with the initial discount.
