Why even rent or buy land, when this SL is being superseded?

I nearly rented an estate sim from our old friends The Chung mega sim renters, then found out, just by chance, that a new second life is being rolled out by  2015-2016, with no way of taking most your inventory with you, and as I have been an investor in combat sims, Pandora sims and renting 65k ones for an Airport. I will lose  over 4,500$ of items, if hardly any of them can be transfered over.

I dont hardly see anyone on weekdays in my time zone of London time, the whole place seems deserted, only around midnight, does it get a little busier, by 9am following morning, combat sims that were full up at midnight, are now virtually empty for 9 hours or more. I just leave the ghost sims and play Star wars online lol

I dont see the point of anybody offering land for sale or rent, knowing the current situation, most people wont want to pay out real money for a sinking ship, that will not offer any compensation, if it was to close tomorrow. LL does not owe us anything, just like when they closed casinos, letting people lose hundreds of real cash overnight.  I dont trust LL one atom to keep this version going for more than another year.

I'm looking forward to Future Life myself. I will be one of the first to give it a try as soon as the beta is released. I don't expect to give up anything in Second Life, I will keep that going until it is just totally redundant.

Things move on Operating Systems change, software gets updated, I like the way that technology moves forward, it's exciting.

Think about the fantastic new combat sims that you will be able to create on the new platform.

I am sorry to see you feel this way, from a certain point we could say its not fair but lets face it, everything has its own life cicle and sooner or later every little thing we own will become obsolete.

And why rent land? To enjoy it until the new SL comes, or you can stay on this old one and play, no one said its going to be shut down as soon as new SL starts. I see it as windows, no one really mentiones xp these days, slowly people moved on and got used to vista and others, and it didn't happen over night :)

Even when you "buy" land in SL the reality is that you are only renting it.

The reality is it has always been that way.

The buying is the cost of moving in.  The only adavantage I got is that when I moved out and sold my land I got that money back.

But it's still like a friend said to me long ago in regarding RL. In reality no one ever owns anything.  At best we are all just paying rent as we are passing through.

The TOS that you agree(d) to has provided for that possibility for quite some time (since long before there was any mention of a "new improved SL)...

Sometime in the next century, most of us are going to be gone. Might as well not bother living as its a waste of time.

If you get a puppy, its going to die anyway - so just kill it now.

If you get a new car, within a decade its probably scrap metal.

If you eat a meal today, you're going to be flushing it in a day or so. Don't eat it, don't buy it, if you did these things already - demand a refund.

Hi Guys, these are all great replys, as I have rented up to 20 sims both homestead and full on mainland or island, since my time here 8 years now,  I may have  been a customer of  one of you during that time..

basicly , SL is and has been the most expensive game played, by those wanting to fullfil in its entirety & get  the most out of it.  Yes things move on, tech moves on, but unfortuently age and disposable income changes the ball game to a high degree.

back in 2007-2010 I enjoyed building many themed sims with an old RL friend Susan, mainly james bond islands, and also had the income to own parcels in the likes of KOL, & Judgement.  I invested heavily in many types of castles, also leading a Lord of the rings Rohhirm group, with us on AKK expensive horses.  In between  I also rented full mainland sims to operate British Aiways Airports, and had a  lot of airliners repainted at a huge cost to current BA livery.

But the days when I could afford to replace and buy new items, came to an end, in 2011 when my wife retired, and my ill health meant I had to retire early , albiet officially not until 2016, but our disposable income, especially in UK has been degraded vastly by high fuel costs , energy, food and water rates, plus Insurances for this and that.

The fact is, at ,now 63, I will not have the income I enjoyed back in days of 2005-11... I would have  no hope of rebuying 1000's of hi grade textures, or the aircraft and water craft I own, let alone buy more castles and dump all my urban & Gorean combat wear and weapons into the bin, as LL is suggesting.  I have never been in a postion to own a full sim, but in days gone past, I could have bought a homestead, but stubbonly LL refused me one of those, despite challenging there rule that I had to buy a full sim  first, its like saying, if you cant afford 1000$ for a sim here, we dont want you.

My car is an auto BMW 528i, it looks like it rolled of the assembly line a couple of years ago, in fact is was manufactured in 1996, at a staggering cost at launch of  £28,000. The technololgy in this car was unheard then, but is now common on most cars these days. If LL had not kept trying to repair an oudated, power hungry grid based system , and rolled out an up to dated version by 2010, then , most of us who were still working then, might have  been just able to restart again.  but I wont be able to for reasons outlined above, for me, My love affair with SL will end when the new one is rolled out, because I no longer have the income to commit the same level of investment I used to have here. Im surprised that many of you think its ok to let LL make no back to back allowances, meaning, even estate owners who rent out sims, will also not have to buy all new sims at probably the same price of 1000$ each, but all the merchandise objects, buildings, textures and trees and foliage you use now to show of sims.

I said to Ebbe that for those of us who want to move over all I can do is ask that you deal with us in an equitable manner.

Although his reply was non commital, I think that is something that works to their advantage to do.

Interesting - now what would have said in 2010 to all the people who would have been BAWWWing the exact same BAWWW that you are currently BAWWWing if they HAD rolled out an updated version, which would have been just as incompatible with the old grid if they were planning on real changes? Is your basic problem simply that it's now inconvenient to you? Nice.

yes, Guess Im saying it is inconvenient, as we all different age groups, some of us, like me, have now retired on State pension. As Im on DLA Im not allowed by law to have any other earnings, unless I declare them,  so in this country we called that a fixed income, that only goes up and down a little each tax year that comes round. But unfortunately that income is being whittled away by increasing living costs.

So, yes, to have to try start again, with most of my objects bought in 2007-2010, being the height of my buying power, it wont be viable to just walk into a new land and build my complicated 007 exhibits that I used to do, My casino I modelled from the 2006 casino Royale, took weeks to build, a texas hold em poker table, exquisite wall textures, statues and palm trees plus, the cars outside being the Astom Martin DB9 and a black Alfa Romeo 159, from Quantum of Solace, will be lost forever, unless, by some mircacle LL allows some of your more expensive vehicles into the new SL.   I mean I still have a Mc Donald Douglas DC10 airliner, I bought 3 years ago, never used, at a cost of 10,000L$ because the grid mechanism just wont let it cross each sim, I left in my inventory waiting for LL to fix vehicle crossing, even asking LL in my premium account ticket  that seamless LL oceans would have helped, but  LL told me then they had no plans to make Blakes Seas seamless. When you fly or sail In GTA5, its completely seamless, with real swell of waves.  Thats the sort of Second life experience in 2014 we should have already. Gurla and Guyachung neaby regions in blakes seas, had three sims with one RAF base, and my two sims for British Airways under BAA land group. Now it remains abandoned for almost a year now, with just grass, in a once thriving aviation community.  Fot the love of mike, why LL doesnt put up for sale abandoned land up for sale straight away, at a much lower price to attract not only new sim owners but bring people back into SL is beyond me...? What sort of landlord, leaves 65k of lands empty for a year, with no option to buy it??

Eventually "Future Shock" was bound to catch up with us, in RL as well as SL. Everything is obsolete now, or will be sooner than we're ready for it to be, and it's no longer just the old geezers who can't keep up.

The subject arose of RL cars, nd the ones for sale today are a lot like those of a decade or even four decades ago. But these new ones today and all those before really won't be on the road in twenty years, or at least not the roads people take to get anywhere. Does anyone really think that two decades from now we'll still let people drive themselves on public roads? Once you own your first self-driving car, won't you do everything in your power to clear its path of any vehicles driven by potentially drunken or texting humans?

As to SL content, if it's scripted and more than maybe four years old, it has very little chance of being acceptable by current standards, so many improved-efficiency functions having been introduced only recently. Then there's the whole thing with building: existing surface ("diffuse") textures, pre-Materials, are pretty much obsolete anyway, or at best require a bunch of work to make tolerable by today's more exacting standards. And that's before considering Mesh itself.

A change to a new platform isn't all that more sweeping -- only more abrupt -- than the changes that already made obsolete so much of the content on the existing platform.

But, to be honest, I think all that is a distraction from the OP's initial point -- which I think has some validity. I don't understand why the special, "rare" land areas in SL  still command such a huge price premium, if their futures are as limited as we're given to understand. I used to think that to own such parcels would be to collect quasi-historical artifacts. Yeah it was always possible they'd disappear overnight, but it was also possible they'd survive as early landmarks in the evolution of virtual reality place-making. I suppose the latter is still possible, but seems mighty unlikely if the new platform is a success. What, then, is their actual appeal? Something other than what I'd thought, apparently.

I had not read anything about a separate second life. What will be different about it? How will it be better? Since it has not even been debuted yet there is still a chance they could make changes and connect second life to it right? Why don't you request it ? Maybe if enough people do they will listen.

Edited Update:

Okay I just took the time to read some online articles on the new second life. Here is a quote from an article I found. I personally do not see why most  textures  for instance could not be moved from one sl to another , You would think that tga png and jpg images do not go out of style right? Here is the quote.

"Linden Lab’s priority in building the next-generation virtual world is to create an incredible experience and enable stunningly high-quality creativity that’s easily accessible across multiple platforms. In order to not constrain development toward those goals, complete backward compatibility with everything created over Second Life’s 11-year history has not been set as an absolute requirement from the outset. However, Linden Lab does plan to make certain essential elements transportable for existing Second Life users, including users’ Linden Dollar balances, identities, and social connections. It’s likely that more modern content from Second Life, such as meshes, will also be transferrable to the new platform, but the specific details of compatibility will be addressed as development progresses. "

You mentioned driverless cars automatically riding around in the future... Please don't let AnnMarie run them. There are still some of her cars loose on mainland. Just yesterday I found one someone had managed to push into my garden until I sat in it and it found a road to zigzag down off on its adventures.

I can look forwards to the future, but I live in the now and since rent and land was always an ongoing expense I don't see much impact on those costs until the new SL is established and has sufficient content people will want to transition. The greater impact will be on buying things that are a longer term investment. Couple dances, animations and new furniture.

Why destroy your 'now' for an unknown 'then'. But also in reverse, why make grand rejections of the 'then' now, before you have seen it?

When SL 2.0 comes... I will look at it as whatever it is, and make my decisions. That day is not here yet - so I will continue to do in SL what I choose to do, based on SL as it is.

  • 1 month later...

Lets face it, SL is so old it doesnt have any right to be in 2014. On other side SL suffer from same thing as many other games i saw in the past, just one to throw out is Guild Wars 1 and 2, where become impossible to "upgrade" the game and making new one is much cheaper option.

I can understand what OP whant to say. Right now i can go and buy mega server for 300$/mo where, if LL would give me a permission, i could run at least 6-8 full sims. In case i have more then one server i could use any sort of server balance technology (or even some sort of cloud) and probably raise that number even more. So OP have a point and LL should start thinking how to "push" people to SL2 and in mean time lower the price for land in SL what would bring more people in SL and make good base for SL2 once it goes live.

Just my 5c.
