Why does my computer keep crasing and I'm still in the tutorial though?

Hi Everybody,

my computer keeps crashing even though i got the recommended system requirements...why is that? Please anyone help me out here.

• Make sure your computer and internet connection meets all of the Minimum System Requirements.  It's best to exceed them in order to prevent bottlenecks, since the  minimum system requirements are the minimum hardware required to run  Second Life at all.
• Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card.
• Check that you have the full version of Flash Player (including the player for Firefox/Safari), see Version Test for Adobe Flash Player, and the latest Quicktime and Java.

Try logging into Welcome Island Public and completing the Tutorial. Go to this page http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Welcome%20Island%20Public3/28/225/25 and click Visit this Location.

Hi Colette,

In addition to the great suggestions Ella gave, it would help if you posted your computer specifications and information as to when Second Life crashes. Are you able to get inworld at all or is SL crashing while loading or indeed can you even get to the login page? What error message appears when you crash?

If you can get to the login page, select Help > About Second Life and copy/paste your computer specifications from the window that opens.

If you are ok now, no need to post details but if you still need help, copy/paste as you would sections of a Word document for example. Hold down your left mouse button and drag over the information in the Help > About Second Life window till it's all highlighted. Then hit CTRL+C (to copy the highlighted text) and then CTRL+P to paste it into a reply here.

Hope all is well now though and you're enjoying SL.

Hi Nyll,

I can even get into the inworld and change my appearance and after about 10 min. approx. Boom, everything's out and my whole computer just goes crashes without a warning or anything! I don't know what to do anymore..I really would like to play this game.

Hi Colette,

With that specification, your computer should be able to run Second Life very well so I suspect this is a graphics card issue or possibly overheating. Second Life is a demanding application. When did you last update your graphics card driver? The latest driver for your card with Vista 32-bit is:

You can use the Nvidia selector here and input your details to get to the download page.  Select GeForce 9 series under Product Details, GeForce 9600GT under Product and Windows Vista 32-bit under Operating System.

To install the new driver or rollback to original if new driver causes more problems, follow the instructions here:

It could also be that your computer is overheating and then crashing after so many minutes. You can check processor temperature with Core Temp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ and graphics card temperatures using GPU-Z http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ (download at http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/ )

The Nvidia 9600GT has a max temperature of 105 C but really should be running around 60/70 C in Second Life. The Athlon processor you have should idle at around 40 C and reach around 60/65 C while gaming. If the temperatures are significantly higher, then you need to improve cooling. Buy a can of compressed air and blow dust from the computer including the fans to start with but there are various other remedies too. Before opening the case make sure to disconnect the power supply. If you can run Second Life for longer than you can at the moment by removing the side casing and placing a desk fan to blow cool air into the computer, then you know you have an overheating issue.

This is just my opinion on what could be causing the constant crashes. I'm sure other people replying here will suggest things too.

Reduce your graphic card setting from mid to low or high to mid. In the advanced graphics settings also reduce terrain, objects, particles (250 - 500) and draw distance (90 -110 for draw) with the sliders.

Thank you so much EVERYONE for your Support and great Advices. It seems to be running now, but now I keep getting that I got a corrupted file; I uninstalled and re-installed the game and I will have to see what happens now.
