Okay, so I'm new to this and everything but I find this to be a very bad idea. No one should have to pay their hard earned money for computer game money. These people who run this already have you paying $6 per month but aking you pay in order to do anything that's just greedy. There's another game I play where membership is $5 per month and you can earn money in game or (this is optional) be cheap and buy you're way through the game. They update once a onth unleashing tons of updates with maybe 24k people paying for acess  to weapons and places free players can't get to.

I'm absolutely against paying to do anything. If you're against this as well I could use some supporters.

You don't seem to be aware that you can buy L$ and SELL them. And oh, 10L$ or a little more for an upload will kill you, really. You don't HAVE to spend any RL money for it too. You are free to choose whatever way you want. I know people that never paid anything and make now enough money for a living. Also being Premium is not a must.

I didn't say becoming premium is a must but I seriously can't find out how to get ahold of in game currency for free. When I first signed up it said to get L$ I'd have to pay real world money.

How do I go about getting money to spend?

Well actually there really is "No Free Lunch" in SL.

There are ways to earn money but most of them involve work.

There is camping and some Clubs have contests.  Minimal work involved in these.

You could learn to build and if you are good at it people may buy what you build.

But when all is said and done there is No Free Lunch in SL.

You can if you want 'play for free.'  There is lots of free content. But then you are just reaping the fruits of other people's labour.

Dear Newcomer.

This is secondlife.com

A 3D Chat Room.

Sometimes, I like to call it a canvas.

Some call it a game, some call it a social platform, Everybody like to call it something.

In your case.. You call it ingame and all you want from "it" is to take away its people and lead them to a "better" and "cheaper" destination.

Also your concern was about money ( I bet RL sux everywhere)

I wanted to advice you where and how to live for free, or where to look for to learn how to earn money, or to present you to the endless graphic boards as about SL Currency, but the more i was reading your post, the more I wasn't feeling able to do that because of my English, and/or not only.

So I spend only 0.10 minutes in Google to search: " IS SL A GAME?"

And then I spend 20 minutes to watch this video, that I believe it represents a lot of the reality of Secondlife.

For me was worthy to spend 20 minutes to watch it, even if i don't agree with it in many parts!! , because I love this world, this 3D Chat Room, since am here every day for many years already.

I dkn what you will do...

Im really curious :matte-motes-nerdy:

The only thing you pay LL for is a premium fee if you elect to be premium or tiers if you elect to own land, both are optional.

Unlike the games you  mentioned, ALL content in SL is made by residents.  Anything beside what you pay LL for,  you pay to other residents to compensate them for the time and effort they put in to creating the content.  Lucky for you some content creators will make some items available for free.  Compared to buying items, you won't have as wide of a choice, and may not get the quality you would if you buy things, but sometimes you do.  If you want the best selection and the highest quality, you need to buy it with L's.

You can live SL for free if you take the time to search for freebies and are satisfied with what you find.  The only thing that is not free is land.  So if you want a home in SL you have to pay tier to own it or rent if you rent it from another resident that owns it.  You can also become premum and get a little freebie house for free or buy a 512sqm parcel on the mainland and not have to pay tier on it.  But not everyone has a house, so again this is optional.

You will never get anything and everything you want for free.  Content creators spend hours and/or weeks making the things you see in SL.  Why should they do that for free?  Many use the income to fund their own SL, cash out and use it to subsidize RL, and a few even earn their RL living here.

You too can earn L's by learning to create content that people want to buy, or getting a job.  However you are not entitled to anything for free.  If you are so opposed to either buying L's or earning them,   then SL is probably not for you and you should leave now before you begin to like it too much and actually spend a few dollars.  :smileywink:

You say you spend 6 USD a month for another game. SL is 9.95 USD per month but you get back 300L a week so at 245L/USD, your net cost per month is a bit more than 4 USD. With the premium, you also get a house. You do have to furnish it but there are free beds and furniture if you look around. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me...and yes, I have a premium account. In fact, IM me inworld and I'll send you a really nice free sex bed that's low prim.

SL isn't a game in the traditional sense. According to game theory, to be a game, you must have a goal, set rules and a finishing point.Second Live has none of the elements of a traditional game.

Second Life is just that...a second life in a virtual world. Here you can RP in all sorts of different worlds and times, many based on games such as VTM or books/ movies such as Game of Thrones, Anita Blake, Star Wars, etc and fight with a meter if you so desire, though you will have to pony up if you want weapons. You can go clubbing. You can hit the Linden roads on a motorcycle. You can meet people from all over the world. Second Life has endless possibilities. Enjoy them rather than complain.

Yearly, your net cost is $8.33 USD a year (52 x 300=15,600. That divided by 245, the average L per USD is $63.67 you are given in stipend. 72 usd - 63.67= 8.33 for the year) ;quarterly is $6.58  USD net for the quarter (13 weeks x 300L=3900L 3900 divided by 245=15.92. Then the quarterly 22.50-15.92-6.58) when you take in to account the weekly stipend you get. That's a pretty good deal in my books.

1)  You're new so welcome to SL but you'd better find a thick skin quite soon.

2)  I can understand your post from the perspective of being new but as you've now been enlightened, LL provides the platform which you may join for FREE.  What you're then looking at is a content marketplace where the content is provided by other residents, just like you, except that they've been here longer and learned to make things and are marketing them for sale.

So, you're not buying things from Linden Lab, those greedy platform providers but you're buying it from people just like you, just as you do in that real world out there.

Absolutely against paying to do anything?  You can do that too, there's plenty of free content in SL if you wish, paid for by the people who DO put money into SL for their own enjoyment and others.

Here's the best bit... there are about 25,000 regions in SL, of which approximately 2/3rds of those are PAID FOR by others.  The remaining land will mostly be PAID FOR by others who are renting it from Linden Lab.

In other words, pretty much everywhere you visit is being PAID FOR by someone...just like you, except that they pay to provide free entertainment locations for you.

Hey, I have an idea, how about if we separate residents into two categories.  Those who pay and those who don't.  The free ones are welcome to use SL but every three minutes, the viewer is interrupted by one minute of YouTube type adverts.

Fortunately, that isn't the case so each time you visit somewhere, remember to say THANK YOU to everyone that provides free stuff for you.

You're welcome!

SL is a building game

people build/make stuff. If your stuff is worth something to someone else then they will pay you for it. If is worth 0$ to them then thats what you get. If your stuff is worth 0$ to you as well then you get that

stuff is not exclusive to things. It also includes experiences, inworld games, clubs, social events, etc. If these are worth anything to someone else then they will pay. If not then 0$

if you want to get some L$ in the game then: http://secondlife.com/destinations/realms

this is the Portal Park. The gate you want is: Linden Realms

On the Linden Realms is the crystal game. Is same as other grinder games this. You grind it by collecting crystals then cash them in for game tokens (L$) and then trade the tokens for stuff. Buy stuff

takes most people about 25-30 hours of grinding to get 1000L. about $US4

No-one has to pay money, hard-earned or otherwise, for L$. If you don't want to pay for them, don't buy them. There's a lot you can do in SL without spending anything.

...paying $6 per month...

If you pay $6 a month, you get a stipend of L$300 a week. That's about 80% of your fees being returned to you in L$. You can cash those out or spend them in-world. Few other 'games' give this option.

...24k people paying for acess...

You seem to accept that it's fine for this other game to charge people for access to extra features, but you think it's wrong for anyone in SL to charge money for anything? Same as here, you can play for free or pay for extras. None of it is forced on you; you choose your own level of financial involvement.

I'm absolutely against paying to do anything.

How on earth do you function in life? Do you steal all your food, refuse to pay taxes and have everything done for you for free? I'd have to guess you mean within games, although you seem to be happy to pay subscriptions for games, so you're contradicting yourself right there.

1. You are not forced to pay anything. Second Life is free to use.

2. What you pay for inworld (like skins, objects, clothes...) does not go into the companies pockets, but to people like you who are skilled enough to create content. You know whats greedy? Wanting people to work for free.

3. You say you pay a monthly fee for another game to get more nice stuff, but at the same time you complain about paying for game content...what?

Go back playing games, kid.
