populated or not. This is incredibly frustrating and I would rather not lower my setttings as I believe this laptop should have no problem whatsoever playing SL at a more than decent frame-rate. Any help or commentary is greatly appreciated, and if any other information is needed I will be glad to answer questions! Thank you all in advance. xo
Ohjiro Watanabe
Well, the thing is that it could be quite a few things. You really need to dig in and find where the bottleneck is on your system. I wrote an article recently called Chasing the Lag which may help. Good luck!
Chic Aeon
Did you tell us what FS graphic settings you are using? If so, I missed them in the very loooooong list of specs. In general, lowering you draw distance can help a lot. According to a website I found, MY HD6950 and your card are very close to equal. I have no issues and run shadows and advanced lighting most of the time and can get two avatars on and still have reasonable filming FPS (so over 15). I typically see 50ish up in the air at LEA7. Your system is heftier than mine with much more ram and similar specs on other things. So it seems like your machine SHOULD as you say do well. That being said there are plenty of sims that because of their design are really (and painfully) slow. I am not sure where you tested, but you might get a friend with a similar machine to go with you and compare. Your computer "might" be doing all it can do. Theresa Tennyson
With most computer games the coders know exactly what you're going to do at any given time and the graphics settings are optimized to do that one thing as well as possible. With Second Life you could be doing anything from taking a high-resolution landscape photo of an area with advanced lighting (which would require a certain type of settings) to being in an area with many rapidly-moving avatars (which would require an entirely different type of settings.) Therefore, the graphics settings of the viewer will allow you to choke your GPU if they're set inappropriately because they need to be flexible. Pushing all the sliders to the right because your computer is "amazing" is not going to give you good results. We need to see what settings you're using to judge what the problem may be. Also, lets be honest about your laptop. It's nice, but amazing it ain't. It looks like the basic hardware is around three years old. If you were sold it as a new, top end laptop you were sold a bill of goods. The graphics chip would have been in the upper-middle of Nvidia's range in 2011 or so. Finally, if you're trying to run SL on battery power instead of wall power all bets are off. Laptops throttle down graphics performance on battery power to extend battery life. Chic Aeon
Agreed in many ways. My computer was not a screamer when I got it but certainly a pricy "gaming machine". That was well over three years ago. AND I get MUCH better performance bypassing wireless which I did years ago. For me it was a 30% or so increase to 13.6 mbps (actual). Wireless was around 9 and I am only 8 feet away . So that needs to be taken into account also.
dd Temin
Greetings... It would be helpful if you say what your internet connection speed test shows? and if you are using Wireless internet connection? and what your Firestorm graphics are set to in preferences. Draw distance will have the biggest impact on FPS. Try using eithernet cable connection in place of wireless.......and set draw distance to 256 or less. That Pc should be capable of ULTRA mode in graphics and still have good FPS in most situations. Make sure you are connected to the battery charger while testing to make sure the battery save is not throttling you back. Turn off any anti virus applications when using secondlife. If all else fails to help ..try a different viewer....singularity or cooVLViewer. good luck
Nalates Urriah
First, you can save yourself a LOT of work by using the Viewer's Help->About... to gather the info about your system that we need. Your laptop with an NVIDIA 560m should be fine for SL and you should be able run between HIGH and ULTRA with reasonable performance, 15 to 25 FPS with ALM and Shadows. The first thing to check is whether or not your laptop is using the graphics chip or throttling back and using the CPU. NIVIDA and Laptops will try to sense games and kick the grphics chips on. Some times they don't. So, go into your NVIDIA control panel and setup a game entry for SL. Set it for performance. THen whenever SL starts the graphics chip should come on. If you attempt to run on battery only, your laptop may force the GPU to minimum power use and slow things down. You can get a free program GPU-Z to see if your computer is using the CPU or the GPU for your SL render. You should see a nividia gpu load over 20% if your computer uses the nvidia chip.
