Open GL Error AND issue with artefacts rendering!

I'm pretty lucky.  I have two issues, Open GL errors, AND artefacts not rendering (see pic below).  I've had both for awhile...since 2012.  I have an Asus G73JW series and it worked like a charm for the first year and a half...2011 and part of 2012.  Luckily I have a pc, so I've just been using it for SL, but now i've moved to a smaller place for the summer, and would like to be able to use my laptop.  So I"m trying yet again to fix these issues!

I just spent $135 bucks getting my system restored along with the Tech guy trying to fix the issue.  He played with the settings, increased the TDR, installed old card drivers from 2011 (prior to when I started getting these issues)  I can't say how much of my own time I have spent trying to fix them.

I've done a clean install of graphic drivers, played with the settings, hired someone, increased TDR, tried 3 different viewers, researched, installed ASUS Gamer OSD and uninstalled it, system restored the laptop, prayed, cursed and almost threw the laptop against the wall!  (that's still an option)

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix these issues, let me know.

I have an Asus G73JW

I finally submitted a bug issue, but i"m not holding my breath.

This is what I see when I"m logged in...it doesn't matter the viewer or the graphic setting.  I can change the graphic setting and this will disappear for a bit, then start again.  Or zoom out and it will fix it.  And it's not a hardware issue.  It only happens in SL and all the pop up windows in SL look fine. My desktop looks fine, it's just contained within SL.

Have you tried it with the CURRENT drivers for your video card? The fact that  those drivers worked in 2011 doesn't mean anything - there have been wholesale changes to the viewer since then and its graphics procedures are radically different from how they were in 2011. The old drivers can only give you problems running current viewers.

Really don`t get why peeps hang on to old versions of drivers, viewers etc etc (ok maybe 2% have good reason, luckily I`m not one of them). I update os (win 7) an drivers whenever there`s an availiable update. No sl crashes (except for griefer attacks), no rendering problems, am I just lucky?....don`t think so.

EDIT:

Apologies for sounding smug and all, the other thread you posted on is quite old and mentions heat as a probable cause. Haven`t been many recent problems posted by nvidia users.

yes you do sound rather smug.  I had the most recent driver installed when I had the Asus rebuilt to the tune of $75 and then I paid another $60 for the tech guys time trying to fix this issue i've tried unsuccessfully to fix for almost 2 years.

He did have the most recent driver installed, and we tried going back to a driver that did work prior to 2012.  So unless you don't know the whole story, maybe don't ASSume you know everything.

I've tried everything EXCEPT posting to the forums and the JIRA for just that reason.  Why not help vs being critical.  If you read AND understood my post you would have realized i've been with this issue for a long time.

AND if yoiu bothered looking at the names of the OLD post, you would realize that I wasn't the OP.  I have an ASUS and heat is NOT an issue...never has been.  kick ass cooling system.

have a great day.

If you read my reply to the other poster, myself and my tech guy tried an older driver ..just to see if that would fix the issue.  I had the newest driver installed when i took it into the shop to be rebuilt.  It still didn't work.  I have reinstalled the newest driver and the newest SL viewer...it still had artefact rendering issues.

Here's the info from the SL Viewer / Help / About SL:

Ok, so your first post shows an unspecified version of singularity viewer is it? With an outdated graphics driver.

Your second post shows a bang up to date version of sl viewer with the same outdated graphics driver.

I think anyones advice would be to have an up to date viewer and driver before anything else.

You can also disable opengl vbo in sl viewer if that works for you,

Preferences> Grahics > Advanced > Hardware

Search opengl second life in google theres page after page of post about the problem.

Ok do that search and apply a filter for results in the past year and there really isn`t many. I did find this which may or may not help the OP.

Part of my point to the OP though, is that they won`t get anywhere especially in jira if they can`t demonstrate the problem on the latest viewer using the latest drivers.

Hi OP,

Seems you are getting some flack from people.

That issue where you see vertexes coming from the (usually) centre of the screen is almost always a heat related issue. The latest drivers, maybe a month old? help a little but SL is a pretty heavy user of the graphics chip in your PC, the nature of a sandbox world where people can make unoptomised builds sadly.

You may get some joy with adjusting the VBO features on the hardware tab of your Preferences>Graphics. I know in Singu there are 2 options, normally you want to turn on VBOs but turn off Streaming VBOs with an nVidia.

You may find though that this comes down to that you are using a laptop. They already have limited heat dissipation, add in an unoptomised building (like someone's latest prim heavy hair) causing your graphics card to just overload things.

It's very likely that every single other program you run works fine, but then they are optomised by graphiocs professionals, not left to players of the game who throw prims at a problem and then load in 1024x1024 textures as well.

So, what can you do? If the VBO options are right and you have last month's driver update as well you may have little choice but to reduce your settings. The game will look terrible once you turn off atmospheric and basic shaders but the load on your graphics chip will be *substantially* lower.

It's likely going to be worth your time to try it for a few day, make sure that the problem does indeed disappear once you turn off atmospheric and basic shaders (reverting to 2006 game quality). From that point you can make a descision on what to do.

Some other hints that might help you, airflow will be critical so make sure you only play on a hard surface, not from your lap.

Anyway, I hope this helps you a little, I am not trying to put your PC down or brush off your issue, just hope that this advice helps.

Take care :)

Thank you!

I uninstalled Chrome (as per Whirly's suggestion), turned off the VBO and I'm always in low graphic settings.  I am so used to SL in low graphics on my PC that I dont know what it looks like in High or Ultra (I will put Ultra on to take pics, but i dont expect to move anywhere).

I did try to solve this on my own a year ago and gave up in frustration.  That's why I took it into a tech guy and spent the money to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue and had it rebuilt.  The artefact rendering would happen on start up, so I wouldn't think heat was a factor.

Thanks for your kindness.  lei
