Hi Phil, I really hope you are right about it all. I saw nothing in the past three days that was good in my opinion. I have started to back track myself and said spending a little money (but I don't see myself renting again but I was leaning that way before last week anyway). I have a couple of places (non-business) I like to go to now and if they suddenly close, I might have to rethink staying.

I don't see why people would have a fear of renting, buying new land yes but renting, you could rent up the the day SL closes 20 years from now and not lose any $ like you would if you owned land. This should actuallly be good for the land barrons right now who rent land.  If you all ready own land for personaly use then why not keep using it.  Say you have an expensive house in SL you love even when SL2 comes out thers nothing saying you have to leave it, just like in RL you can  have a house you normaly live in and buy a sceond vacation house some place else, or even just go on vacation with out buying a sceond house.

I work in SL I have land in kitely and visit friends in SL and inworldz, and I've given up noting any where to do so.  SL2 will just an other gird I plan to visit and may be build a 3rd home there some day.

What DMCA and how is a DMCA going to affect sales in general?

I believe she is referring to the Wowmeh takedown spoken about in detail by the creator
. While i do not completely believe a merchant would just sit back while their body of work was ripped from SL and do nothing because they do not want to give their RL info in a counter claim
(to SL as far as i know, not the original filer.)
She states her work will return better and fully made by her. It sound like she may have used someone to make a part of the av and perhaps they got bent at how little they charged and how successful it actually became.. Pure conjecture on my part BTW.

As to the OP.. I have had the same amount of sales over the past week, i actually had a spike on Friday. Several others here have stated they have had no change. Perhaps it is simply a fluke that you have not made any sales. If we could lok at your store we could possibly make a better assumption, which is all this is as no one actually knows why anything happens in SL. But, alas, you don't wish to share that info. Personally I don't get that. Any potential sales are a good thing.

"(to SL as far as i know, not the original filer.)"

That was a good question. I'd heard it brought up before, never looked it up.

Yes, a copy of the Counter Notification (with all the info) does get sent to the original filer.

".....upon receipt of a counter notification described in paragraph (3), promptly provides the person who provided the notification under subsection ©(1)© with a copy of the counter notification, and informs that person that it will replace the removed material or cease disabling access to it in 10 business days; and"

Good grief. What, are you some kind of Martian lawyer, for crying out loud?

The Forum is not for dropping links to documentation. The Forum is for yelling.

Then I did my job...gave you something else to yell about.  ;)

And that is what I am exactly worried about as a consumer. If enough creators/designers think like you (and I think you are right), Second Life will turn into a VIRTUAL WASTELAND. It is people like you and Cats and the others in this thread, that people like me come to Second Life (not because of Linden Labs). You provide the imagination, Linden provides the environment. And I am sorry but Ebbe's pronouncement is why Cats saw the decline in sales. On that point, I will not waver. The only point to ponder is whether it is temporay or permanent and you are right, that discussion needs to go in the other thread (although how the other thread descended into a discussion on kiddie porn, I have no idea).

I've actually started going on a bit of a buying binge. My thinking is if there's something I want to do in Second LIfe I might as well do it now. I just bought a new car for my avatar - it's an older car and I know it will never successfully transition to a new grid. So? It's a good car HERE, NOW. It was hand-made by creator who I know does good work and hasn't ended up on my personal blacklist for being annoying on the forums (that I know of; there may be a reason I end up buying alot from Japanese creators besides their often being awesome.)

As far as generational thinking goes, I came of age during the 1980's (as my avatar whines, "Maaahhhmmm!!! You're EMBARASSING me!") Right now I work with a lot of younger people and I explain to them that we acted the way we did in the '80's because we all thought we'd be dead by now.

Songs said things like:

Everybody's got a bomb; we could all die any day,; but before I let that happen gonna dance my life away

Nothing's permanent - everything's on loan here. Even your wife and kids could be gone next year.

And they were talking about real life. And what's more, it was true - and still is. And spending a few dollars for an imaginary car I might not be able to use in a couple years? Cheaper and safer than cocaine and sex with strangers.

So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999 - I explain to my young friends that for my generation we're already in the bonus round.

Im absolutely not spending money in Second Life anymore dont know if you heard but Linden Lab will pull the plug and stop broadcasting the grid when it becomes unprofitable, In my opinion it allready goes down the hill since 2011. Lately since the news is out people massifly abandoning sims and mainland prices are because of that low to buy in L$.

I have zero faith Second Life will make it to SL12B "Second Life 12th Birthday" next year, As Linden Lab will start to work on some sort of new failure grid that would be as they say way better then it ever will be for Second Life.

Either your keeping faith and put money in a deadbleeding concept or be smart and dont spend a dollar/Euro anylonger keeping fait and think things will be ok would be the same as you using drugs.

Second Life will die face it, it is just a mather of when can be tomorrow can be next year when SL2 is released!

I was lucky to have my sim sold befor this news came out otherwise im sure nobody would buy it from me so at the end im laughing Linden Lab in the face, You guys dont hurt me anymore with stupid releases and silly news!

Im off to real life now:)

Goodbye then!!

(waving a cheery farewell, and going back to enjoying a rich, happy and creative SL, and hoping to try out SL2 when it's ready for testing, perhaps in a few years time)

Regarding the OP, I have many short-term fluctuations in sales both inworld and on the MP, and have learnt to not panic over a drop. My sales have steadily increased since 2007, with a few blips and pikes. Nothing untoward has happened yet with them. I don't expect it to, but will keep watching, of course. I plan to continue on as usual, and devote the usual time to learning, creating amd enjoying, and will keep my ears open to find out what skills are needed for SL2.

Anyway, let us know if your sales return? Was it temporary? Also, it's kind of hard to comment on your situation without knowing anything about your business, service or product.

Best of luck, whatever you decide to do :)

SL is all about entertainment and joy.

Just because in a few years probably something comes along to replace TV's completely, are you going to throw your current tv away and stop watching it completey?

No.

In SL you pay for nothing, its all fake, its all pixels.

You pay to be entertained and you are.

I spend money in SL so I can have fun today and now.

I watched a movie last week and you know what, in about a year I will probably not watch it again... so is that money thrown away?

No, I enjoyed the movie.

I've been here for 5 years, enjoying every day and am going to continue till they pull the plug, which will be when SL starts making a loss and that will NEVER be if YOU decide to stay.

I am excited about SL2 and want to give it a go, but if you and your friends stick around and keep a few regions going, that tier will probably be enough to let LL decide to keep SL running on a server for a few more years.

No.

A more apt analogy would be, If you would know that, come next week, 4K TV's started replacing all current TV's. would you still buy that new HD TV tomorrow? Or would you, like any other sane person, just delay your purchase until next week?

You may not like that reality (nor do I, for that matter), but you can nonetheless expect a significant drop in sales (especially once the dreaded date draws neigh).

How selfishly parochial! For you maybe, but the coming year is going to be a period of effort and depression for people like Pam, whose involvement in SL is a full-time job allowing her to support her family. Perhaps you could pull some strings and get her on the Cheerleader Committee, so she could receive some LL bunce to cheer her as she is working 20 hour days to convert her products to whatever format Mr Altberg eventually decides, using whatever tools Mr Altberg eventually decides, to a migration timescale that Mr Altberg eventually decides, for sale to a market that will decide for itself whether it is interested in something that may never happen.

Instead, why don't you join me in my better life! I promise that you won't have to deal with incipient nationalist political movements, or fascist reactionaries, and you will never get a hangover from the free drinks that I shall be providing.

Just sign up on my feed, follow the instructions for transfer of your assets to my cult - no need to convert formats, I'll even cash out the Linden Dollars myself -and I guarantee a worry-free future.

Update:

My sales are at an all-time-low as of today still.

I am in circulation taking with a group of other retailers with a sizable membership that report the same.

Whatever the right's and wrong's of all this, it is definitely affecting sales in a huge way. I hope that trend changes soon :(

I'm sorry to hear this, Cats, and hope that it picks up.

My sales are still healthy (although increasingly they are becoming skewed towards the MP despite me having inworld stores). But perhaps there is a more specific pattern rather than it just affecting "all sales". Are sales of furniture and houses (land dependant products) falling compared to clothing and avatar attachments? Are sales of relatively expensive items now more likely to be reconsidered by many residents, while they still don't mind spending less for shorter-term-use items? Are prim and sculpt based products taking a further hit because mesh may be transferable to SL2 whereas older content won't be? Is everyone too busy prancing about in their new SLink mesh bodies to do any other shopping this week, (lol)?

Don't worry Cats, I am sure a few Linden alts will be along to buy some of your stuff real soon so that Ebbe can claim here that the "temporary" slump has nothing to do with his premature announcement that will erode the market to almost nothing until his project gets cancelled.

Wait.. just responded to this in a different post.

You're copying & pasting the same rant and posting it in different threads??

You have made some warped assumption that people give a **bleep**..

I think LilyBeth was commenting sarcastically on Ceka's suggestion that the drop in sales was perhaps the result of the upcoming US holiday.

I'm sure that Americans constitute an important enough component of SL's population to impact upon it in this kind of way, but not so dramatically, I'm sure, as is being reported here.

My MP sales (shared profit goods I've scripted,  in two different stores, neither under my name) are pretty much what I'd expect for this time of year (which is always quiet).

The first half of June was particularly slow, but it picked up considerably in the second half so that, overall, my June sales were about what I expected compared to the previous few months' sales.     I have no explanation for either the slow first half or the improved second half.   Business had picked up before Ebbe's announcement, and didn't slacken off after it.

Not a good time of year for sales overall. June started fine for me then dropped off, not unexpectedly -- but did so before the announcement of SL2.
