changing avatars

when i signed up and it told me to pick an avatar, it didn't say i couldn't change it later. that would have been fine, but the skin color won't change, and other alterations i made aren't showing up (hair). is there a way i can change to a different avatar?

Yes!

Open your "Inventory" and look for "Library > Clothing". You will find many folders with differents initial avatars. Drag and drop thar folders yo your avatar.

You can change you avatar at any moment.

The default avatar you chose at the beginning can be changed at any time. You can change skin, shape, hair, clothes, whatever. If you look in your Inventory > Library, you'll find the rest of the default avatars (can't recall the folder..clothing I think) and you can change to one of them. Each folder contains a skin, shape and clothes and some other bits. If it's an icon double click to wear or if it's a little box right click on it and select wear. You can change the default hair volume, shape, colour etc from the Appearance menu (right click on your self and select Appearance in the pie chart). Basically you can be what you want in SL be it male, female, a cardboard box, a dragon, whatever. It's just a matter of changing shapes, skins or wearing parts.

You can also find a huge variety of shapes, skins, clothes and prim hair  etc at freebie places or buy better quality ones in stores. Use the Search box and type freebie or free shapes or whatever and then teleport to the location shown.

if you really want t o start from scratch go back to basic mode and when you log in you will see my avatar tab - you can select a fresh default avatar again . log back into advanced after that and change appearance accordingly
