You are correct.  You cannot upload prim meshes today.  Linden pre-announced Mesh importation at SLCC 2009

During T Linden's road map presentation at SLCC 2009, a sneak peek was shown for Mesh importation into Second Life, along with dynamic lighting and shadows:

I know how adding attachment spots works. But LL should include them in their official viewer so you use them for other attachments than invisible ones.

Oh, wow! So they're finally going to allow us to import previously created models? That would be wonderful! Is there any estimate as to when we get to see this become an actual feature?

They're planning to do both.  Avatar meshes and additional attachment spots.  Also importable object meshes, if I read the news correctly.

But avatar meshes would actually REDUCE the need for attachments, in many cases.  Because the mesh itself could be deformed and textured to look like a cyborg arm, or a furry's paw, or whatever.
