You can upload BMP, JPG, TGA and PNG images. JPG-format is not recommended fpr sculpties since it does not use a lossless compression algorithm. TGA and BMP are lossless. TGA and PNG may contain alpha channels - transparency/partial transparency

It is obvious that your files have transparent parts. A broken background layer? PNG does include transparency by default. Interlace is meaningless for SL. JPEG or TGA should work fine for texturing. Different formats may cause minor color differences.
