Why do I see invisible patches on myself and other avatars?

For some events, I take the prim hair from my avatar, revealing a shiny noggin and what appears to be a section of total see through on my forehead.  I've also seen these patches on my neck, wrists, ankles, even hands.  I've had a few friends tell me they have similar issues.  It's not solely my machine, people around me see the patches of invisibility on me as well.  I've tried reducing graphic quality, rebaking character textures, removing the "hardware skinning" checkmark", and plain old relogging, but the patches are still on me.  Before anyone starts accusing my graphics card, I've been in SL for almost a year and it's something that's been happening the last 4 or 5 weeks.  Anyone else have this issue and if so, how did you fix it...if you were able to fix it...

I found that this only happens to me if I log on with Second Life in a reduced window, if I logon with the window maximized it doesn't happen. (So far anyway, fingers crossed)

psst don't tell anyone i told you so, but it's a conspiracy to reduce the number of skins and textures people are buying on the open market so they'll buy only 'approved' skins and whatnot from 'official' vendors to be named later .... but that may be just a rumor.
