Question

Hi, I love to go role playing in Second Life but I have some issues when I try to move in some areas. This issue is not always showing and usually I am alone with a friend on the land. Are my non RPG attachments affecting it someway? Is something I can do from my side? How can I better palying?

Some areas are poorly script and will end up becoming sluggish if there are to many people in the Sim or there are poor scripts in the sim it can cause performance dips. You can adjsut your bandwidth under Edit > Preferences > Network as well as the disk cache in that same area to see if you can get an improvement in playability. You can also adjust your graphics options by going to Edit > Preferences > Graphics and clicking Custom and sliding around and unchecking things to see if you get a performance gain as well.

You can also hit the Key Combination Ctrl+shift+1 and keep an eye on Sim FPS, Sim Ping, Physics FPS and Time Dilation as Well as FPS to see if there are Dips to see if it is your end or the sim you are in.

First it is convenient to remove all objects with scripts that you do not have to use for the game, go to edit, preferences (ctrl P keyboard shortcut), graphics, hardware options and disable the entries,:enable anisotropic VBO on libraries OpenGL, which slows down the flow, then go to the network, leading to the first item maximum Maximum Bandiwitdh (value 1500, default is 500) to increase the bandwidth used by the viewer adsl, apply and ok.

Rather than rely on written answers set up your own practical test.  Log in to a role play area.  Check stats by pressing the keyboard shortcut Control-Shift-1.  The pane that opens up gives your framerate, the sim's framerate (45 is optimum), and time dilation (1.00 is optimum), as well as other useful numbers.

Walk around and assess the feel of the sim.  Stand in one spot for a few minutes so everything loads and settles down.  Then remove all your unnecessary accoutrements and stand still for a few minutes.  See if it makes any difference to stats whilst standing.  Walk around and see if there's any difference to the way the sim feels.

You can compare with settings low, middle, and high, or when wearing one complicated avatar as opposed to a simpler one - there may be useful knowledge to be gained.

The single most practical thing you can do is take a look at your 'Avatar Rendering Cost'......ARC.

This is viewable via the Advanced menu option ( Ctrl-Alt-D) to activate that.

In Advanced.....go to Rendering.........Info Displays....and then select Avatar Rendering Cost.

You will then see a number appear above your avatar's head. That is your ARC. If the number is displayed in green, it means your ARC is nice and low.....I think green is a number below 800. If it appears in yellow, range 800 to 1500, then you are starting to generate lag via your scripts and worn items.

Above 1500, it appears in red.......and its amazing how many avatars are walking around with ARC figures not just in red but numbers like 6000.

I have one item of hair that alone increases the ARC by 3000. A single item can cause most of the lag you are experiencing. So it is well worth switching on ARC and trying out different outfits to see what numbers come up.
