My Avatar has really large hands and feet, can anyone help me fix this?

Hands and feet can be adjusted in Appearance mode, using the sliders.  If you are wearing a demo shape, however, you probably can't modify it at all.  Designers typically sell demo shapes with gigantic hands and feet so that you won't be tempted to wear them in public.  You're supposed to pay for the non-demo shape, which has proper-sized hands and feet.

Now that mesh hands and feet, worn with alpha masks, are in wide use, presumably that precaution is now considerably less effective than once it was.

I suppose that's true. I haven't seen many of those (well, the hands, anyway) yet, but they must be giving shape creators fits. I wonder how they're going to compensate?

Several reasons why this might be happening. Now if you've tried editing your shape to no avail then its most likely the reason stated above. Try a different shape. Also, if you've recently applied a shape for a mesh avatar or a shape that breaks the default skeleton to fit a certain avi. Often times it will warp your skeleton so that no shapes after that look right. When this happens just log out and back in. That will reset your skeleton and shape to normal.
