That area of "jaggies" that you see in the screenshot is due to not having your anti-aliasing (a technique to smooth hard edges) enabled or set high enough.

I don't use the LL viewer but, on my TPV you can access the advanced hardware settings by clicking the Hardware button in the graphics window. Once there you should be able to set the anti-aliasing to 2x, 4x, etc. Unless you have a really stout video card I wouldn't go above 4x or your performance will tank and in some cases crash your viewer.

Also, keep in mind that the photos you referenced were most likely edited and enhanced using a graphics program like Photoshop, GIMP, etc. and what you see normally onscreen will never look that great without major manipulation (just like RL models never look as perfect on the street as they do in the glossy pages of a magazine).

Make sure your Antialiasing is turned on. Click the Hardware button (that you can see on your own pic). If you take pictures, make them twice as big or even bigger (3x-4x) in the snapshot window. For the blogs they are cutted to the things that are needed to see and then scaled down to the proper size.  These tricks should give you already some good results. Other things is to play with the light settings and also DOF Deepth of Field. Some viewers have a very advanced interface for the DOF and light settings. You need to read that up for the viewer you are using and also some viewers have support groups you should join. There you can ask things about the viewer you use. And you can also joing classes in SL for learning more about that subject.

In addition to correcting your anti-aliasing, you should also work on your depth of field, so that the avatar pops away from the background better.  Like anti-aliasing, depth of field settings can be accessed in the advanced hardware settings in Preferences >>> Graphics (at least in Firestorm or other TPVs).  The other things that make the examples you showed look professional are all due to good post-processing in Photoshop, GIMP, or whatever.
