how to take off hair? with a locked symbol on it.... "new hair"

There are two kinds of hair.  Most of us wear "prim hair"...a sort of wig...all the time.  This hair has the symbol of an object (a little box) in your inventory.  This kind of hair can always be removed by right clicking it and choosing Detach.

The other kind of hair is "system hair."  It's a special type of body part, and it has the symbol of a little wig in your inventory.  Before there was prim hair, this was the only kind of hair there was, and it's pretty ugly.  It can be styled and colored with the Appearance sliders.

But these days, most of us don't even notice we are wearing system hair, because most of the time, the style we're wearing has the sliders set to zero, giving us a bald head.  These "baldies," "bald caps," or "eyebrow shapers" are used so that system hair doesn't stick out through our pretty prim hairstyles.

But here's the thing...you ALWAYS have to wear system hair.  It's one of the four "essential" things that define your avatar -- system hair, eyes, shape, and skin.  You can't take off any of these items...but you CAN replace them with another item of the same type.

So...sorry for the long winded explanation.  The solution to the problem is to find a baldy in your inventory and wear it.
