why has SL not banned groups that are related to financial domination?

Question

I recently lost someone to the sickest of the sick groups. The people in the groups are using RLVa to perform financial dominations. the slaves in these groups are transferring their lindens (earned in sl or transferred from credit cards) to their so called masters, the most illegal things on SL. I do understand it is the wish of a person to do anything with their money. But please look into the other side of it. Some people are slowly drifting or being pulled in with addictive methods.

One of the group definition reads as follows

Looking for useless little c***s who deserve nothing but contempt. Join my group. Adopt the restrained life viewer. And I will control and punish you until we milk your credit card dry. In exchange I'll promise to humiliate you and treat you like the piece of c**p that you are.

Linden Labs... guys please i beg you to stop this immediately. I really dont believe this is anywhere close to legal. I have already lost my best friend here (my friend transferred all the money in her SL account and any money she is creditting in on a daily basis to another guy and he has given an extremely sick collar that pulls prevents her IMs, local chats, her avi and her SL all together)... i dono how many are going to oppose me or support me... please try to understand and stop this. We all know RLVa is used and people are having fun but that stays in SL... this is extending further and is going beyong limits. If this is not stopped now, i can promise that so many are going to get affected.

And here - by lost my best friend - i mean i am no longer able to IM or CHAT to my best friend, it requires the other guy's permission before my best friend can respond, i am muted by my best friend. cannot see my best friend as well

I understand its each persons personal choice to get addicted and screw them. I agree that we are all adults and we are responsible for our own behavior. But let me ask this, as adults, are we supposed to watch them screw themselves up? are we supposed to provide means to support these behavior ? How are we then adults ?

We can NO longer hide behind the curtain of "each have their own individual rights". This does NOT apply in this case. THIS is dangerous as i have already mentioned - this behavor is not limited or stays within SL ! A person's real life is being controlled and the means of doing that is available to everyone

Update after below 3 Answers

I am only wondering because all response seem to burn down to the point of "Individual rights and individual's own consent and will". I agree. Maybe i am wrong asking to ban these type of groups. But that made me think of another question. If our children become a victim of financial domination... would we then say individual rights and their own consent" and not say a word... !?

I perfectly understand what each answer is speaking about... but still finding it hard to digest is all. Please bear with me !

Hi EroticArts,

We're residents, just like you. So, we neither make nor enforce policy. The presumption here is that everyone engaging in adult behavior is an adult. LL's concern is avoiding liability for illegal activity in SL. The behavior you describe, while potentially destructive, isn't illegal in RL, as far as I know. I think that makes it unlikely that LL will address it in SL. I certainly don't mean to condone the exploitation of one person by another, but it's done in countless ways in RL and here. SL addiction is, by definition, self destructive in any form, and needn't require others to participate.

If you witness a breach of the LL TOS or Community Standards, file an Abuse Report.

I'm saddened to hear you lost your best friend. I've watched friends spiral out of control here as well, for various reasons. I wished there was something I could do, but at the end of the day, we're all adults and responsible for our own behavior. Be the best friend you can be and respect people's right to screw up.

Hugs,
Maddy

That's like asking, why hasn't the government not banned "Payday Loans" type companies, which charge customers 4000+ APR in some cases.

Answer is, they're not illegal, and there is a demand for them. Whether they are doing people any good or harm, or society in general is something people like us, who wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole with a rubber glove on the end, wish to see the end of.

As Maddie so rightly says, its awful to watch someone go down the slippery slope to doomsville, and while you can submit an abuse report if you see something that you believe is against Terms of Service (or even anything that upsets you personally - after all LL cannot know unless they are told of the existence of something), you cannot stop the decisions that other people choose to make.

While reading the following, bear in mind that I am completely repelled by financial domination...

Sorry, the fact that you think something is illegal does not make it so.  BDSM, and financial domination, is not illegal, although it may be morally reprehensible.

The use of RLVa to "control" a "slave" in Second Life is completely consensual.  The person put the collar on, AND THEY CAN TAKE IT OFF ANY TIME THEY CHOOSE.

Giving money to another avatar for services, or even just as a gift, is not illegal.  If it was, tipjars at clubs would be outlawed.  Your friend is choosing to give her money to another person, and there is nothing that compels her to do so.  I mean, there's no function in a collar, for example, that "makes" you pay $L.  There ARE devices that, once given permission, can take money from your account, but these are not (AFAIK) used by the findom roleplayers.  They're more commonly used by con artists, and in THAT context, they're "illegal."

In other words, it's your friend's choice.  If this is how she wants to spend her time and her money, that's up to her.  "Those people" are not doing anything to her.  She is choosing to engage in this form of roleplay, and it's up to her to say yea or nay.

There are many, many, MANY forms of roleplay in Second Life, and a whole lot of them are sexual in nature.  Some of these are going to be offensive to some people (some of them sure are offensive to ME anyway!)  This does not make them illegal, and it does not mean they should be banned.  Where do you draw the line?

LL did draw one line.  They banned "sexual ageplay," the practice of roleplaying sex between an adult avatar and a child avatar.  But that's about it.  Everything else goes.

Yep. So, how is it "illegal"?

Wasted? Is that you?

Adding to the other good answers, with some clarity:-

DEBIT permission must be accepted, manually and consensually, by any avatar seeking to give money via a scripted toy. The user must choose to give access to their L$ account in order to lose any money, and there's no way for this to be 'forced' from anyone, ever.

RLV/RLVa can be disabled with a single click and a relog. There are no penalties for doing this at any time. Use of RLV/RLVa is also consensual.

There is no exploitation here. Your 'best friend' is choosing to live under these restrictions. There's no 'addiction' issue and no lack of freedom or choice. Adults are capable of making these choices for themselves - there's no point concern-trolling, children wouldn't be in these groups or at these locations.

It doesn't have to be financial domination. People get addicted. I know a woman who was so into an online chat community that she lost an unhealthy amount of weight, neglected her children, and almost wrecked her marriage. And all she was doing was chatting.

People fall into holes and they are so excited they don't realize where they are. It's hard to pull them out if you can't be there to make them see the misery.

Hmmm... no one mentions principals, the morals of free citizens, or philosophy or psychology.

Controlling people and forcing them to conform to our, or some group's (national, social, or religious) ideals is the basis of fascism.

The base point in the purpose of this thread seems to be the OP losing their friend, somewhat self centered, based on the personal opinion that the friend is a victim...

Maybe their friend would rather give his money to a domme than pay for one more pair of shoes...
