Hello SL!

I'm Geremio and make my living playing video games and are bloody good at what I do.  Been playing SL for about 3 days now and can say I got a good grasp on the game's mechanics.  Please to meet you in advance :)

Just curious to know how much it is to hire staff.  I intend to hire builders, security and scripters.  Looked all over but price ideas are not mentioned.  I saw someone who was paying L$6,000 for a whole village...  Sounds pretty dismal to me but I only been here for a few days and are well off already, so what do I know.  My in game time is limited due to internet constraints so I think hiring builders will be better financially than waste all my precious high speed BW on building things.  I just don't know what to offer those residents!

I intend on eventually hiring the following:

  • Builders
  • Dancers
  • Escorts
  • Security
  • DJ's
  • Scripters
  • Bartenders/Barrista's
  • LOTS MORE

I intend on buying an private island next month so I can bring my genius to fruition, so if you're interested in working with me, let me know here, then I'll send you a friend request!!  I am on a planning phase right now so I need to get as much information as possible.  This also means I have to estimate my costs.

All help is greatly appreciated!!

-Geremio

Actually I got the impression from the OP's post that he may be interested in a Club featuring gambling/gaming ("I only been here for a few days and are well off already,").

If that is the case I suggest the OP makes sure he has a clear understanding of the Wagering Policies and Skill Game Compliance.

Builders and Scriptors are not going to come "cheap."  Not at the level of expertise needed to build a club from the ground up.  They get real life equivelant money for their work, especially if it's customised.

DJ's will vary a lot.

Hosts, Hostesses, Dancers & similar generally work for tips.

I'd suggest you browse the employment section of this Forum to get a feel for this.

Others have already mentioned the financial aspects of your project. I'm only going to add that builders and scripters will ususally discuss their payment on the amount of work you ask them to do.

The other aspects of your future business depends entirly on you and your abilitly to communicate and your talent as a business manager. I agree with Sassy, that it sounds like you plan on running a club. You are not the first one doing this and you enter a highly pressured market. There are many clubs. You have to attract people and you have to keep them. Don't expect your club to generate any profit, you can count yourself lucky if it pays for itself after a year. If you want to hire escorts, you will need to place your club on A rated land.

Your main barrier may be that you have been in SL for only 3 days. How should people trust you? You have to make sure that you can show that you know what you are doing and that you won't disapear after a week.

Instead of making 3 posts...

Wow, hey... thanks for the feedback everyone, really appreciate it =D

Well, a club yes but only in technical terms, it will be similar to a club but entirely unique to this game... but it's not a club, let's call it a congregation where people do some "work", like a day job but high risk factored in.

There will be a club but very small will have a cover charge, more like a high-class bar than an actual club; and this is going to be but a small part of all the fun.  It's hard for me to say more without giving away the whole idea, then I really shoot myself in the foot especially where others are much more ahead of me in terms of contacts and actual experience in the game. (War gamer xp speaking)

There will be some gaming aspect but probably not the way you think, not conventional gambling as you know it.  You play for a high score, bragging rights and potentially your money back plus a bit more; entry fee never changes.  I know I'll need to run my games through Linden Labs first for approval.  Again, I'm 99% sure there won't be issues but I do things right from the get go.  I got tons of games to chose from I can build, I am a (Ruby) game developer in RL and build new concepts daily.

As far as scripting goes, I wouldn't expect developers to work for free for sure, I wouldn't either myself.  Thanks for the "legallity" links, it's a bit un-clear tho except for the RNG & Live Races betting but skills games are fine, like beating the first level on Super Mario for a stupid example but in my game you could, for example, get your money back if you win before par and get 1 extra coin if you set a high score, for example.

What would y'all think?  Again, I'm not making yet another Mario game lol

Hey, thanks :)

Yeah, I get it, I'm pushing my luck, who am I, right? ;)

However, I never amounted to anything by not putting myself out there and sayin: hey, I have a project, let's do this, what will it take?  To me it's starting a new business and are super excited, the first steps of a business are always the most exciting!  I am doing what I didn't do when I first started in business, what I didn't know and eventually, someone will work with me, everyone likes money, right?

I'm not really scared to spend.  I could get an island now but I want to take a month to learn the basics, hence why I am here...  Kind of like preparing for war in a war game.  Usually, the best wars are those that took the longest to prepare for ;)

At some point, somewhere, you have to trust someone but knowing who to trust is half the battle.  That's why I don't have to worry about missing a tier payment, somewhere, I took a risk and scored.  Also, the club will be a small part of that will be the "Pièce de Résistance" of that island and it will be private to enter, premium members only.  I think so FAR outside the box, this is ONE island... ;)

I have also invested a decent amount of money on my avatar and have a premium membership...  I am serious about what I do, especially when it touches my business and my passion (gaming).  I know I come out strong out of the box, I'm also not intending on starting right away or in the next few days, maybe only at the end of the month or next month.

Should I just put up a thread to find a builder just to get rate ideas?

You said it best dude, my young age makes it my biggest thorn...  Alexander the Great was very young too =D

Games of skill are permitted, pure gamling games based on rng are not.  Having said that, Zyngo is hardly a game of skill as far as I can determine since at a random time, the thing can take back all your points.  If there were pure skill then this couldn't happen.

Anyway, don't take the comments here as negative.  We don't know you or what you're capable of and if you never try anything, you'd never know either.  Just take the feedback as "guiding words" and answer the questions posed for yourself.  If you're confident that you have solid answers then continue regardless. :)

Best of luck, interested to see what you come up with.

If you say that, you do not know me ;)

The most critical time when you start a game is at the beginning; screw this up it's all over and might as well restart.  I might be bitting more than I can chew, wouldn't be the first time but nothing has ever stopped me either.  Miss out in the beginning, you're stuck catching up the rest of the game.   I know there's a steep hill to climb so if I get ahead of myself now, I'll be ahead of the game when the time comes.  I have a gift when it comes to video games.

You are underestimating me...  I don't blame you, lots of fake-ass people in MMO's and I probably played them all, seeen them all and killed them all... but I above all, LOVE proving people wrong :)

Good sig btw, thanks M8 :)

Second life is not a game. It is not WoW, Tera, Aion. Heck it isn't even Puzzle Pirates!

Second Life is a 3D world. While there is player created games in it, SL itself is not a game. Judging by your last post you treat it as a run off the mill mmorpg when it's anything but.

It is not a game, henceforth it cannot be played as such.

There is roleplays inside it, skill based and notso skill based games, but SL itself is NOT a game. It cannot be played.

So either you're screwing up your terminology good and proper or you missunderstand what SL is on an epic scale.

You are absolutely right, of course, iCade, but I have the sense that the poster views pretty much everything, including RL, as a game.

Although I appreciate the value of play, it's not a view for which I have much sympathy: I'm not particularly interested in winning. But that's just me.

I am entirely clueless about setting up a business in SL, so I am confessedly unqualified to comment on this thread in any substantive way, except to say that I smell hubris, big time. And I'm reminded of Proverbs, too: "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

But I'm sure people who worry about such things seldom win. :-)

You are correct.  I don't know you.  But you don't know me either.

You asked for our opinions.  Based on my time and experience in SL and what you wrote I expressed mine.

There are obstacles you will need to overcome.  For instance you spoke of getting a "cover charge."  There is a huge "play for free" attitude that pervades SL.  To get people to pay you are going to need to come up with some very unique ideas.  I'm not saying it can't be done.  I've seen events that required a "cover charge" to attend.  But they are very rare in SL, mainly because of the "play for free" attitude that pervades SL.

There are also technical limitations.  You can only have so many people present on a SIM at one time before the experience begins to degrade.  While a properly built SIM can reduce the problem, it still is a problem.

Maybe you have already seen these issues, but based on what you said I was unsure if you had.

I didn't write to be a negative nanny.  I really welcome and encourage any one who can bring new and innovative ideas to SL.  But a lot of people start and then get burned because they didn't have a clear grasp on how a lot of things in SL work.

Then stop marketing it as a game!!!

Seriously, I was looking for a good, peaceful, MMO game on Google and saw an ad for second life and off I went.  So, talk to your LL department then, don't be mad at the way I play, jst enjoy it!!

To me IT IS A GAME!!!

It looks like a game, controls are all the same as all the other 100's of PC games I own, I can buy in it like every online browser/console/client/steam/gog game I play but here I can make money, which is also advertised!!  You know...

Who am I to fuel this economy?  Geez iCade, should I just take my money elsewhere?  Maybe away from your store?  I will copy this thread and send it to LL for disclosure.  If you are right I'll be asking for my money back becasue I was mislead.  I was under the impression I was playing a video game.  ^0)

To heck with you sti, I'm playing a video game and I am dam good at it.  I'll take my gamer skills and create things beyond your wildest dreams with your approval or not, like it or not!!  I'm not here screw around, I'm here to stretch the edges of the box side tot side AND front to back!  I LOVE BUILDING FUN & UNIQUE THINGS and I acheive this by working like a gamer, always adapting, overcoming and improvising.

Don't take it personally.  I knew that as soon as you used the word game there would be someone to bring up the endless discussion here whether SL is a game or not.  Some people have a more narrow definition of what a game is and seem to need to contradict those who do not.  Just ingnore it or this thread could devolve into another one of those discussions.

Thanks for not lynching my play style lol

I know I have much ot learn, won't be easy, Paris wasn't built in one day...  but it was built nonetheless
;)

Well one of the things you are going to need to learn in your play style is that many people, quite possibly the huge majority, myself included, do not see SL as a Game or just a Game and be careful not to lynch them for that.  It's a very quick way to alienate your potential customers.

It's "Our World, Our Imagination," a place where we can bring into fruition the things that we think, the things we imagine.

Same as what you are wanting to do.

If you've already a game plan in place, or at least an idea, the best way to utilize the forums to find staff would be to go to this forum...

http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Inworld-Employment/bd-p/InworldEmployment

There you'll be able to find people looking for work, or at least you'll be able to get in touch with people and inquire about their rates. You won't have to give away your entire concept, either. You can look for people who specialize in exactly what you're looking for.

I'd start slow and work on one thing at a time. By that I simply mean finding one person who can fit a specific need, working out as many details as you can with them. THEN work on finding the next person. You could, of course, look for them all at the same time, but that may be a bit more than you truly need at the start of your new business.

I'd also look for backup folks, for just in case. Anything and everything can happen in sl.

Best of luck to you with your venture:)

Enthusiasm is a very good thing. However as you have spent only three days in Second Life you cannot have good grasp of what Second Life is all about. Thus I suggest that you spend time in SL first, explore places with keen eye, look what people are doing here. What kind of places there are already.

Second Life is just a platform, there are no monsters roaming about what we must kill to survive or earn some game points. When I travel about in SL, mostly people are not playing games. They go shopping, they go to live concerts, they build stuff, they go learning how to build. They might just sit on a beach or some other place, alone or chatting with friends. There are lots of activities in SL what one can "play". Sailing, flying an aircraft, driving a vehicle on the roads, bowling, golf, I have even seen icehockey and wolley ball played. Then there are various kinds of role plays going on in some regions.

So, get to know Second Life better, and then decide based on that better knowledge acquired what to make your place like. This will aid you in making a good sound decision and prevents dissappointment which may well come from hastily jumping on things.

I wish you good luck on your venture. :smileyhappy:

Yeah, Yikes!!!  Where was the warning label on that one LOL

It's like republicans trying to explain to democrats why personal gun ownership is good and the like, a democrat trying to tell a republican to hand over their guns...  at least that is a fun and hilarious debate!

The debate if this is a game or not is absurd to me.  It's childish, leftwing mentality.  Throw away logic.

PS: I never take anything seriously unless it's my business, my buddies or my family, I consider all as one, I'm actually finding this all quite comical, I never knew there was people who took games as real life.  In hardore war games, those who even insinuate to it get booted and killed relentlessly, often forcing them to leave the game entirely.  Last time I took a game too seriously, I quit the game lol ;)

I know, I know nothing yet compared to the long timers hehe, eager beaver here!

I've been a lot of places, some places I can't even go because I'm not old enough and many places are too slow for me to stick around.  I don't mind the lag in clubs when it's a straight line to it like Ambrosia Club; love that place, DJ is awesome :)

I don't expect anything, really, I just do what I love doing, playing a game!

Then I would like you to explain to me YOUR perspective because I don't see it....  I respect people until I am dis-respected then it's only fair for me defend myself, I didn't pick on anyone's views here.  Just beause I'm the new guy doesn't mean I will let anyone pick on me, especially when I am asking for help for be steered in the right direction.  Where I come from, THE WEB WAR GAMES I PLAY we call this, ready for this?  THREAD-JACKING!!!  In war games, this is punished this via all on assault on the offender..  but I am peaceful in this game unless I go to a war zone or pushed beyond reasonable limit.

I don't mean to be an a$$ to anyone but seriously, why do people just start crap when there was NO CRAP to begin with??  Was I asking for trouble?  I would have appreciated a warning message from someone saying, hey man, that's a heated topic.  Now that I know not everyone's not just going to assault me, I can sleep with both eyes closed.  Doesn't mean I'm selling my guns, I am an gun rights advocate :)

In business, no matter what, you'll never make everyone happy and trying to is totally insane, doing your best, it's all you can do.  Too many companies adapt to freeloadin' whiners and lose their hardcore player base, who are the big spenders!!  I give good customer service but I don't let customers walk all over me either.  I'd rather let go of troublesome customers, refund their money, thank them for trying the product and guess what, I still get repeat buyers IRL by diverting a dicey situation and losing one sale.

With this thread, I am gathering a wealth of information, or what we call "Intel" in war games which can be further decoded and decyphered.  I already know who my audience will be and how I can adapt according to what I gather in here.  You'd be shocked what I can take out of even the simplest sentences ;)

Anyways, out of here for today!

Peace out!
