Help Island public has a group of people camped out the main one is NV einvee. THey are harrasing anyone that lands there trying to provoke them into quiting SL very personal attacks from the way their avi  looks to racism from their RL photos. I would stay clear of the area for a while. Unlikley Linden will sort it out many of my friends  are a bit anoyed today.

Why should anyone quit SL because of a group of assholes? Second Life is so big...there are hundred other places to go to. Also any half experiances resident shouldn't be suprised that this kind of places together with sandboxes and infohubs are likely to be griefed.

Ya your right people who are nice should stop using these places. Used to be a hang out spot for me but not anymore have to let the trolls win.

Well...what do you want to do?

Staying there, when the trolls and griefers come out won't do any good. It just gives them targets to play around with. If nobody stays, the griefers are left on their own and will get borde quickly. Trolls and griefers gain their fun from people responding and interacting with them.

The only thing nice people can do in this situation is directing those who don't know any better to safe places.

When I landed on newbie island all that time ago there were three griefers at the 'starting pad' when I appeared I had a ton of very vile IMs, it was a rough start, so what I did was copy pasted the IM's out loud and just said 'who can teach me the block function?' I was lucky in that a veteran girl was hanging around and very kindly helped me to block the offenders, this only stops the messages and verbal abuse, but sometimes that's enough. Every starter area needs a kind vet who'd willingly help the new comers, even if its just giving them a landmark to another safe start area. :)

Admittedly LL should be more on the ball with reported players, but we can't have everything :(

Hmm, I always wondered what these places are good for, really. I know when something goes awry during a TP you end up at one of those unwelcome centers and no-help islands. Then you take another LM and TP the fock outta there. I also know that some peepel actually like to hang out at these places. WTF??? Poor souls, bored and boring @$$wipes having nothing else to do than to mutually grief themselfishes. It's in fact the social underbelly of the SL population and no self-respecting avatar should spend any time at those sad sad locations.

Once upon a time, these places (the "help islands", welcome centers, info-hubs, etc) were made known to new arrivals. Now these locations are kept hidden from new residents, so any zero-day avatars that arrive there are alts of oldbies, pretending to be newbies. I suppose these are created to engage those griefers too dim to realize they're being trolled.

Help Island Public has been the number one haven for griefers since sometime before 2006... I can't say when, but even that far back the official 'help islands' had been abandoned by the Lindens and the rest of the community as a hopeless cause. Even back when the grid was full of lindens and you could easily meet one or two of them a day just random exploring - they didn't bother policing that spot.

Its why I give it an 'avoid this' warning on my getting started guide. But it looks like I just say "Help Island", and I should not this really refers to "Help Island Public" as the actual "Help Island" is only available on your very first login - if you start there - which avatars no longer do - ergo its offline even though its online. o.O

As LLs has not bothered to police  that spot for at least the 7 years - unless they have a regime change where it counts, its hopeless to ask for them to do anything. Best to just warn new users away and accept that those who do land there are lost to us.

My theory on the linden abandonment of the place is that this is the spot where the lindens first realized the kinds of people coming to Second Life were not the fellow techie sandbox geeks they had hoped to attract - so in 'frustration' at the kinds of people that were actually coming to SL, they abandoned the lot and began their long standing stance that 'user retention was difficult' when it never really has been. Just the users they want are difficult to retain because they don't even show up to begin with...

Strange really. You cant win. Griefers if they get board will start on the rest of the grid to the point sim owners are takeing extra measures to keep griefer alts off thair sim. Everyone ran and some considder that a form of action that will send griefers after you. So Stay or go your still going to deal with them.

Going IS the best option and there is no such thing as "win" on any side. Griefers are boring little losers who gain their enjoyment, if you stay. They chose uncontrolled land and places that may attract unexperianced users, because it makes their game easier. Fact of the day: The whole grid isn't made of uncontrolled newbie-land. Most sims are in fact in the hands of experianced and careing residents, who will take care of griefers.

In the past ten years, changing the place hasn't lead to a wave of griefers rushing over SL. It was always the best way to escape their nonesense.

Im telling ya itsTHE thing to do. Theres even a word for it. De-noobifying. These gals snatched me up week one and told me what a skin was. They de-noobified me. We went back to the Welcome Area out of nostalgia and saw all these saps picking on noobs. The only diff between the bullies and the noobs was a skin a shape and prim hair. We dam sure tried to rescue em.

Are you sure you mean Help Island, and not Orientation Island?

I'm a regular at Help, and on the whole, other regulars are very nice, and so helpful. Sure, you get the odd troll and griefer, like any other Welcome Area, but most people that are regulars are not youngsters, but adults of an older age group.

If you think Help Island is a bad place...steer clear of Korea, Ahern and Violet...scrap that, never go to any of the old Welcome Areas, they are all a hotbed of weirdos like me ;)

info hub.JPG

It had been a while since I'd been to an Info Hub.

The scrolling banner right above his head was a warning about not accepting Vampire/Lycan "bite" requests.

There were about a dozen people there and no one was talking in Local while I was there.

That certainly does not look like the hub at Help Island, Perrie, you were at Help Island Public?

No, that was one of the Info Hubs.

I didn't even know they still existed till I was out sailing one day a few months ago and ran into it.

Ok, no wonder I didn't recognise it :)
