I can not get past initializing VFS.

Machine: Drivers updated, running at least minimum specs with drivers updates. Windows 8
Viewers: Firestorm, SL viewer

Problem: I start up the programs and on both I get "initializing VFS" then it hops to either a black or pure white screen and i can not close it unless i go through my task manager. Done it for both of the viewers now and i am going a little crazy. I have tried the majoritiy of the fixes i have found so far but none seem to be working.

You have a corrupted installation, possibly because you downloaded the file on a weak or flaky Internet connection.  You aren't using wireless, are you?

I know it has been quite some time since this was posted but i had been using my friends desktop that already had Sl installed. I recently lost that computer so i need to install on my laptop. I have attempted to do as you instructed but it is just not working. Any other ideas? (you are a huge help so far)

Unfortunately, a clean reinstall is THE solution. If it is not working for you, then your download is being corrupted. Avoid wireless completely and be sure to reboot both your router and your modem.
