Before you get to the DNS question, be sure that you have downloaded and installed a current SL viewer.  All of the viewers have had multiple upgrades since you last logged in to SL.  If you are using one of the major ones (Firestorm and Linden Lab's V3 viewer) you will not be able to log in unless you are using one of the three most recent versions.  When you reinstall, be sure to do a Clean Install, this way >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231

If you have done that and still have a DNS problem, try amending your router's list of potential DNS server sites.  Google's free public DNS server works well in North America, but you may want to try adding others as well.  You shouldn't need to delete any servers that are already there (possibly provided by your ISP).  In use, your router will work down the list until it finds one that works best for you.
