Hello, I'm considering on purchasing a desktop which got me curious on how many FPS I will achieve with the specs I chose:http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/Desktop-questions/qaq-p/2334369 (link to a previous forum post)

So, what are your specs?

I'm mainly looking for the processor, RAM, GPU, and amount of PING you recieve from your wired/wireless connection (please include that detail with your list of specs as well).

If you have any additional information such as on how to hit higher numbers in FPS such as amount of ping, type of graphics card and it's horse power, etc.-please, feel free to include that info as well.

These are my specs:

 

CPU: Intel® Core i5-2320 CPU @ 3.00GHz (2993.25 MHz)
Memory: 8173 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 650 Ti/PCIe/SSE2


7meg DSL. Pings are in the 60-80 range. Wifi is not recommended for SL due to higher ping times

 

The only thing I would increase is the wattage of the power supply. 500w seems a little skimpy for the 660. Go with atleast 1000w. Be prepared for the future. Depending on cost, go with a solid state hard drive instead of the 1TB.

I do not wish to intrude on your post, forgive me, but I wondered if this pc would run SL at midrange well...ty and sorry once again...

Kelley, that system should be a really good SL computer based on what I've learned here. There is one thing you should probably check: a person posted to this forum recently about having all kinds of trouble running SL with his Nvidia 780 Ti because Second Life didn't support that card. The box you show specs for has a 760. The 780Ti is newer than the 760 so there's probably no problem with the 760 but I'd check if it was me buying that box. I don't know where to go to check what new stuff is supported but someone in then forum (multiple someones, I'm sure) does and might post a link.

And your question didn't interrupt anything; this was a thread discussing computer options for Second Life. If you do post a question here that might be better off in another section of the forum someone will usually tell you (politely, most times). So feel free.

Now, let me decode the numbers after the card identifiers:

5 = Defaults to high-ultra graphics settings.Shadows set to "Sun/Moon+Projectors."
This is the highest performance class available. This card can do it all.

1 = We claim to support this card
This wouldn't be the first time LL claimed to support something they didn't but if they don't this gives you permission to ‮hctib‭ 

0 = Not stats based.
This means they didn't test the card to see how whizzy it is, they know it's whizzy.

4.3 = Expected OpenGL version. 4.3 is the latest version.
This means that nVIDIA is more up to date in their support of OpenGL than LL is.

So, the long (okay it's too late for the short) of it is that your proposed video card is supported, your first launch of the GPUUpdateViewer will default to Ultra Graphics with all the bells and whistles turned on, it'll probably be 43 years before LL uses a version of OpenGL that's beyond what your card supports and they based their promise on a guess (and probably a good one) rather than by actually checking it. They let us do the checking, and I know that people with GTX 780s are in-world having a blast even as I type this, so the checking has been done.

One thing to point out: the FPS you achieve isn't just a matter of your computer, but will depend on the build, how many people are there, and your settings. Take a look at Penny Patton's blog post in which a single tiny object using multiple large textures (which made no sense given the object's size) took the frame rae she saw in the sim down from 75+ to 5.

It'd probably run fine on a 400W supply, but I bought an 800W supply to give me plenty of headroom for expansion. 

I use a wired DSL connection, and ping around 200 msec to the sim I'm currently visiting. It's usually under 30 msec to my local server with minimal jitter. fps varies wildly with location and number of nearby avs.

Power supply - no idea how to find that out.

Ping - no idea how to find that either, but I'm on fibreoptic broadband usually around 21-22mb/s download speed. Wired, not wireless.

I usually run in medium-high settings without advanced lighting and I get around 30-40 fps in a quiet sim. With advanced lighting/shadows on, fps drops to about 10, and I can't run depth-of-field at all.
