Start by taking a look at this overview of the basic building tools >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Build-Tools/ta-p/700039

Once you have done that, you have many options to choose from:

1. Go to a public sandbox and start practicing.  Maybe see if you can make a stool by yourself.  It's not a bad first project.

2. Visit the Ivory Tower of Prims in world at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Natoma/211/164/28

They have an excellent set of self-paced tutorials and a sandbox area where you can try things out.

3. Visit Builder's Brewery, NCI, or Caledon Oxbridge University.   Each of those places also has tutorials, but the best part is that they also offer free classes at several levels from beginner to very advanced.

4. Start lurking in the Building & Texturing forum, learning what builders talk about.  As you have some experience and have a question for other builders, post it.

5.  Take a look at the resources available in the Creation Portal. You'l find links to many tutorials, tools, templates, and materials.

There are probably as many ways to build a stool as there are builders in Second Life.  I've seen a stool built with one prim (and not a sculpty either.)

Here is a way to build a simple stool with four prims.

  1. Rez a cube.  In the Objects tab, change the type to Cylinder.
  2. Hold CTRL+SHIFT to get the re-sizing handles and flatten the cylinder to about 0.1m thick.
  3. Place the flattened cylinder at sitting height
  4. Rez another cylinder, but make this one just 0.05m in diameter, and stretch it so that it goes from the bottom of the seat to the ground.
  5. SHIFT+ drag the leg you just made to make a second copy.  Position it a third of the way around the seat from the first leg.
  6. Repeat to form a third leg.
  7. Change the coordinate system from World to Local
  8. For each leg, hold CTRL to get the rotate controls.  First, rotate the leg about the Z (vertical blue) axis so that one of the other axes points directly out from the center of the stool.  Then rotate the leg a small amount so that the bottom of the leg is angled a bit outward.
  9. Repeat for the other two legs
  10. Select one leg, then holding SHIFT select each of the other two legs and finally the seat.  Hit CTRL+L to link the prims.
  11. Name the object (in the General tab) "Stool"
  12. Texture with a nice dark wood texture.  Or maybe a leather texture for the top and side edge of the seat.

I leave it as an exercise for the student to figure a way to make a stool with three prims, two prims, and one prim.

Oh, all right.  Here's a hint:
