When you have sold L$, the dollar proceeds will be placed in your USD balance.  You may use them to pay bills due to Linden Lab (land fees, Premium membership ...) or you may transfer them to your PayPal account so you can use them in RL.  See http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Account-balance/ta-p/700015#Section_.2
