I have an RLV collar and my ex master informed me he could read my IM's.

I was owned by my sl bf and he had a collar on me, which i didnt mind, but one night over an argument he said that he could recieve all my local chat, teleports and my personal messages (IM's) and would receive them in his email. 

I really dislike this as it's a complete invasion of privacy and i didn't know.

Is this true with a collar?

Hi Panda,

An RLV collar can relay local chat, and teleport information, but it cannot relay IM conversations. Remotely monitoring local chat without the consent of the monitored is against the Second Life Terms of Service. This fellow does not sound at all trustworthy and it sounds like you are no longer with him. So take this as a lesson learned (I've learned my share of them here ;-) and be more cautious in the future.

Also, if you disable RLV at the login page (Preferences settings), then log in and remove your former master as an owner, he can't do anything any more. 

But the others are right.  Regardless of what collar you have, or your RLV settings, no one can read your IMs except you, the person you send them to, and Linden Lab.

And the National Security Agency, I guess. :smileysurprised:
