why can't i edit my shape?

Some shapes are sold with modify permissions and some are sold no-modify. Presumably you have one of the latter so you can't edit it. I can't recall offhand but maybe the default Library avatar shapes are no-modify.

You can create your own shape at no cost or you can buy a ready made one with modify permissions that you can tweak yourself. You usually pay more for one with modify permissions. Be sure to try the demos first.

If your hands are huge, there's a very good chance that you are wearing a DEMO avatar.  Creators typically make some body part (often hands or feet) unusually large and ugly on a demo to discourage people from just continuing to use it instead of paying for the real thing.  So, if you like the shape otherwise, buy it.
