How do you create an avatar and sell it on the marketplace or in a store?

That's a major project, for which you will need to develop skills in 3D modeling (mesh) and texturing.  You will have to install and learn to use Blender (which is free) or some comparable 3D modeling software (which is not), and you'll need to do the same with GIMP (which is free) or Photoshop or equivalent (which are definitely not).  You'll also need software to help rigging your 3D model to the structure of your SL avatar.  People use Avastar for that.  Learning to fly all of that software takes time.  Fortunately there are loads of excellent tutorials on line and there's a large, helpful community of creators in SL.  Start lurking in the Mesh forum and the Building & Texturing forum.
