As black as t' 'obs of 'ell  - Yorkshire/northern Enlgand-speak for As black as the hobs of Hell, meaning somewhere very dark, ie up north on a winter's rainy day, or in the coil oil (coal hole - coalhouse)

Which is strange that we (or at least I) in the US use it when it's most probably a UK based expression.
