I noticed this in the notes:

 

  • New Features
    • "Region should block rezzing and entering during final time before a shutdown"
      • This is to help orderly shutdown of the region.

      Can you define "final time?'  After the restart has been announced?  The final seconds?


      I was hoping that perhaps this was being done to ameliorate the problem with lost objects after a restart but the statement, "This is to help orderly shutdown of the region," seems to imply it is more for internal matters.

In one of the server meetings they were talking about blocking during the last 60 seconds of the shutdown process.

There is also something about shutdown notices now including the region name. That should help when you get a notice just as you tp that may appear to pop after you arrive some place new.

Restarting the main grid regions even without updates?

I know that occasionally Linden Lab perform restarts of servers whether or not there is a code update but could we PLEASE have some clarity here?  Why are there Main Server restarts scheduled (see Cincia's post re the GSP) if there is no new code?

There is nothing slated on the Google calendar, I notice.  This GSP issue is becoming a real pain, it needs to be sorted out pronto.

I wonder, should I raise yet another JIRA about it?

It might be a good idea to do the restart, because of memory leaks and stuff, but the Status message is looking confused, for "do they know what they are do9ng?" values of confused.

To be honest, it looks a little as though somebody saw the lack of announcement, and put out the initial Status message thinking it had been forgotten. I was told that rollouts started at the stated time. when, a few months back, I asked about the apparent delayed timing of the rollouts starting message (start about 5am, announcement at about 7am), and then the Cancel message came at about 8.30am.

So I infer that somebody was on watch in the middle of the night, who can post Status messages, but nobody with the authority is told anything at 5am, the 7am messages are almost automatic, and at around 8.30am some poor sod had a nasty shock.

It does make me wonder if there is any formal message passing which gives the routine Status sequence any useful meaning? It almost looks as if the support team are as much in the dark as the customers.

Looks like it does show a visible change , unless this project intentionally switches off SSA on LeTigre Regions. I have seen people rezzing slowly / go through blurry state when teleporting into 2 Le Tigre Sims i visit frequently.

Not that I'm doubting Norton, who seems to be well-informed but can we have clarity of the status of Server-Side Appearance on LeTigre please.  Is it on or off, and if off yet again why in God's name do you keep playing Ducks and Drakes with it?

There are folks on LeTigre sims crying out for some stability so that they can go about their SL business with some degree of certainty about how things will and will not rez.

I KNOW LeTigre is an RC channel but the recent "now you see it now you don't" aspect of SSA is becoming intolerable.

Yes, SSA is defintely gone from LeTigre. The logs show it.

That's a long-winded way of being sure. I was just watching how a Le Tigre region wasn't behaving like a Magnum region when I entered.

Since we are going to be running SSA I do wonder what the point is of running new code in a non-SSA release channel is. What will the testing reveal this week reveal?

I know Linden Labs is being very cautious with the role out of SSA (server side appearance), which is good,  but I do not understand  this one week Le Tigre has it and the next week it doesn't pattern that is going on either


is there something wrong going on we are not being told or something?


overall SSA sounds like it is working good, but the Sunshine project page (https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SUN?) does list a few issues that do need to be resolved it appears like

Thank you for raising your concern about LeTigre. The reason for that is simple, and has not so much to do with the SSA project itself. We needed to move forward putting a new project in the RC pipeline, while BlueSteel was rerolled with a fix for the notorious grey box issue, and we were keeping the same SSA project build on Magnum for another week to collect more data. Our hope is that with the data that we have been collecting for Magnum + (LeTigre and Magnum) from the previous weeks we can confidently say that it's ready for prime time.

You know a lot of this confusion could be avoided if LL would clearly state what they are doing and what their goals are with the restarts of each region.  Fixing some crash modes means very little when we may have dozens of different things causing crashes all over sl or even in on particular group of servers.  If the RC servers are to be effective or have any real meaning we need to have an idea what to look for, otherwise we are just left to dangle and spin our wheels hoping that finally LL manages to fix our problems. Given the large decline of online numbers since the first of the year you would think that LL would show more concern for its remaining loyal players and try to keep them informed, but apparently player input is a low priority.

Server crash fixes are in one area they can often evaulate well all on their end. LL can see all the logs showing how often all the regions on the grid crash and why, while the user base can see none of those logs. For those cases, people going about and using SL normally will be all the help they need.
