Kelley Wonder
Would someone please help me and tell me the steps for making a rope, one that is curved, as on a pier? thank you so much.....
Rolig Loon
If I were doing it today, I'd use Blender and make a mesh rope. I've made rope with standard prims -- cut and tortured cylinders and torii -- but that's a primmy way to go and it always looks fake. You can get a low L.I. and a smooth, continuous form if you follow a curve with mesh cylindrical segments.
Sassy Romano
Heh, I was going to say "go into blender" but I was going to have to spank myself for being a smart ass but I agree, it's just easier, especially since there are rope builders for blender that would also allow baking of a normal map to fake a rope texture. Amethyst Jetaime
If you don't know how to use blender then look on MP for sculpted rope.
Coby Foden
If you know how to use Blender then just Google: "Designing rope in Blender". You'll get lots of links to tutorials how make a rope.
Kelley Wonder
Thank you all for your answers. I don't wish to get into Blender at this time. I wanted to learn prim building and sculpting first. I realise I can buy a rope on mp, but wanted to learn the procedure myself. Thank you again. Drongle McMahon
I don't think there are any ways of doing a rope nicely in prims without using too many prims. Extended rope is probably one of the small number of things that can still be made efficiently in an oblong sculpty and end up lower LI than mesh for the same detail and without wasted triangles. However, by far the simplest way to make the sculpty would be in Blender (or other 3D program). So you probably have to face that challenge soon enough anyway. I would still do it in mesh. In any particular case, the extra flexilbility would probably allow you to match the LI of the sculpty by using detail only where it's needed. Morgaine Christensen
Maybe this guide on torturing prims will help you http://ayumicassini.blogspot.com/2009/07/ultimate-guide-to-prim-twisting.htmlhttp:// And, as others have posted, it really is better to create primmy items in blender where you have a lot more control over how the final product will look. If you are not ready yet for Blender but still want to dabble with mesh check out Mesh Studio https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Mesh-Studio/2993083 or some of Cel Edman products https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/13486 Market Place. TishaRogue
If you're just starting to learn building then I would suggest going to the Ivory tower library of primitives. There are demonstration kiosks with notecards in many languages for each category of learning to build so you can get an idea how you can torture the prim into the shape you want. Also don't discount texturing as a big part of faking a look. It wont be an up to date version of a rope but you'll learn what you can do. Other places that have lessons are Builders Brewery and NCI (i think its still there) you can find these places using the in world search feature.
