Tina, first things first. You have my sympathy. I have been in very similar circumstances (although in my mother's case at least we didn't need an airlift; there was a hospital in town that was capable) and I know it is never easy to deal with that.

The second thing: I assume from what you wrote that you are a leader/key person in a group and the membership depends upon you to organize/publish/whatever.

If I were in  your situation, I'd let SL go for now (and I did, believe me). If you have an SL friend you can email who can post to the group explaining your absence, then fine. Otherwise, SL just has to wait. If after you get reconnected inworld someone is unhappy with you for being away.....well then that someone may need to learn the difference between SL and RL.
