External programmes for content creation

Question

SL is great for creating content as for almost everything the tools are built-in to the viewer.  For most things there are external programmes that will make the job easier though, and for some (animation, mesh) they are essential.  The great thing is that everything you need is still free!

For scripters there is a wiki page detailing external script editors and IDEs. As far as I know the other preferred (free) tools include QAvimator for animators, Blender for 3D/Mesh and Gimp for 2D building and texturing.  There are many audio-editing programmes to choose from, the one I know best being Audacity.

Finally, the question: before I go spamming the specific creation fora for the specialists' views on such tools does anyone already have a more exhaustive single list?  Which aspects of content creation have I left out?  Comments?

[ETA: If you are looking for an alternative to Gimp try http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/01/the-10-best-free-photoshop-alternatives-because-adobe-doesnt-love-you/]

I suppose you could add Wings to the 3D modeling lineup.  And for (somewhat specialized) uses, there is Sculptris, Sculpty Paint, and Rokuro.

Then there are some in world (non free) add on tools, such as the devices that create sculpties from a collection of ordinary prims, or Avastar that works with Blender to create meshes specifically for SL.

Well, the SL wiki includes a rather exhaustive list of tools for texturing , another fairly long one of tools for machinima, and one for 3D modeling software for  mesh objects (although that list really should be named something other than "Sculpted Prims: 3d Software Guide").  Oh, and if you're interested in sculpties, there's also a long list of Resident-Made Sculpty tools.   You can access all of those, albeit with a bit of digging, in the SL Creation Portal.
