If you're on a Wifi/Wireless connection, use a wire via ethernet.

For a more personalised response you'll probably need to share more about the specifications of the PC that you're using, and the typical connection speed from your machine. You can test this at http://www.speedtest.net (ideally, pick a target location on the Western side of the USA)

Dee,

If you are connected to the internet via a wireless router stop it. Purchase a Cat5 Cable and connect your PC directly to the router.

Secondlife runs very well under Windows 8. I recommend that all Windows 8 users do the following to ensure the best possible performance. Especially upgraders on existing PCs I've reviewed you previous posts and if you are using the same PC as before, I'm not sure a Windows 8 Upgrade was a good idea. If this is a new PC then that is a much better situation. Many of your earlier issues looked to be a problem with reliable connectivity to the Internet. A new PC and/or a Windows OS upgrade will not fix this issue. Would you also please post the Make and Model of your PC in your question so we can help you further. The advise below I gave you on a previous post.

Please don't start another thread and update your question [ X ] with your status [ X ] with additional information as follows: Select the Options drop-down menu to the right of your question and select Edit Question.

All Windows 8 Users

1) Manually apply ALL the Required and Important patches for Windows 8 from Microsoft. A new Win 8 PC needs 4-5 iterations of this to get them all. The easiest way to do this is to:

a) Enter Desktop Mode b) Launch Internet Explorer c) Right-click on the options area of the Browser and turn on Menu & Status Bar [and any other of the old standards you like] d) Tools / Windows Update. e) Select the CUSTOM button so you can monitor and select the downloaded options to install e) Repeat until all are DL'd and installed

Note: Don't install the Bing Desktop. Also, don;t install any Windows Live components unless you have an email account with Microsoft.

2) Identify the Video / Graphics system in your PC and get the Windows 8 drivers direct from the Video System manufacturer.

3) If you just performed the items 1) & 2) above, please reinstall SL again using the official version from Linden Lab. [be sure to do a clean install

Here is the Windows 8 Manual System File cleanup procedure since it's not in the procedure above.

Windows 8
1.Using File Explorer -> Libraries / Computer / ( C: ) / Users /
2.Press the Continue button to get permission to obtain permanent permission edit this directory.
3.From the View drop-down menu option select Options & Change Folder & Search Options
4.Select the View Tab
5.Under the Hidden Files and Folders options click on the - O Show hidden files, folders & Drives radio button
6.Push the Apply Button then the OK button.
7.Open C:\Users\\AppData\Local and delete the contents of your Temp folder and the SecondLife folder.
8.Uninstall Second Life using the Programs and Features tool in the Windows Control Panel.
9.Download and install the latest release of the Second Life Viewer from http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/.

You should be up and running in no time.

P.S. I recommend these steps on all Windows 8 PC's and Laptops, specifically designed for Windows 8 with high-end Graphics Sub-Systems or Graphics Cards.

P.S.S. - On Upgraded PC's & Laptops - If your computer was not designed specifically for Windows 7 or Windows 8 these steps may still help. There are many "Designed for Vista" PC's that don't upgrade well to Windows 8. If your PC was designed for Windows XP, Windows 8 is usually NOT a viable option, practically speaking.

People are still telling people not to use wireless. That is old out-of-date information.

There are different types of wireless access points. Those that use the 'g' protocol may or may not work. You'll have to test and see what type of speed you get and how reliable the connection is. See: Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection.

The newer dual band routers with 'g' and 'n' protocols should work well. If you can, be sure you are using the 'n' protocol to connect. Some routers will indicate which protocol is in use with which devices. In routers you can enable and disable a protocol. By default they are all enabled. On the client side your wireless NIC will pick the fastest connection it can find. If it supports N and can find an N connection it will try to use it. So, generally look at the router and laptop specs to see what they support.

My wired connection averages 30mb/sec. The laptops that can connect via 'g' and  'n' are slower, in the 15mb range. That is more than SL needs.

One of the problems with wireless is the number of connections it allows. Computers make numerious connections to SL and its backend servers. In colleges the router can be swamped by student wireless connections and not be able to support SL. Older routers can run out of connections in home use. A latop and a couple of phones can overload them.

If you can restart the router and things improve, you may be running out of connections. Or the router may be having other problems.
