We're back with an action-packed round of server updates this week, with three new projects entering RC.

 

Second Life Server (main channel):

The main channel is getting the server maintenance project that was on all three RC channels last week.  This project fixes some crash modes and fixes some LSL-related bugs.

Second Life RC BlueSteel

BlueSteel is getting a new project this week.  This project is another one with under-the-hood changes for experience tools.

Second Life RC LeTigre

LeTigre is also getting a new project this week.  This project, called 'server side appearance', changes the way in which avatars set their appearance.  More details of this project can be found here and here.

Maestro, after the LeTigre roll will the the servers actually be doing the baking in those regions, or is the code just being deployed but not switched on?

It looks like LeTigre will be using SSA as soon as it's rolled on Wednesday.

"Client side baked textures are no longer shared with other connected agents, so the functionality was removed."

This means that on LeTigre regions, people using non-SSA compatible viewers will show as unrezzed clouds to everyone using an SSA viewer and people on a non-SSA viewer will see everyone using an SSA viewer as a grey avatar.

Anyone who has not updated to an SSA compatible viewer should do so ASAP.

  • Viewer 3 users - latest download can be found HERE
  • Phoenix Viewer users see HERE
  • Firestorm users should be on the 4.4.2 release, see HERE
  • Other third party viewer users, be sure to have updated to your viewer's SSA compatible release.

As far as I am aware all the viewers listed in the top section of the TPV directory are SSA compatible apart from Imprudence, Dolphin and Exodus.

CoolVL Viewer which is not listed on the TPV directory is SSA compatible.

(Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about Imprudence, Dolphin and Exodus viewers not being SSA compatible).

For people who like Exodus, there are nightly builds that should be OK for server side appearance. These are not supported at all, but I've found the Windows build, at least, to be very usable. It looks like they may be trying to get a normal release out too, but it's not out yet.

Adding -- EXodus now has a supported SSA version out, Beta 9.

We do seem to be making SSA complicated. But I've seen some pretty dumb questions asked elsewhere on the Forums.

I hope nothing goes wrong on Wednesday. Past reports from user group meetings suggested that it wouldn't necessarily be activated on a whole RC in one swell foop. I hope everyone involved on the Linden side is speaking from the same script.

I suspect Firestorm Support is going to be interesting tomorrow, for Chinese Curse values of "interesting".

We've done a handful of smaller tests of SSA. The roll tomorrow will be to a full RC channel, as previous testing has not turned up release-blocking issues. We will be monitoring the release carefully.

If you note particular oddities or bugs with the release, please file a JIRA with your observations and we will investigate.

Maestro, I just filed a JIRA/Bug Report https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-3183 because following yesterday's deploy, all communications from my sim are now failing to make it to email. For instance, any purchases from scripted vendors send a confirmation email - I can see the transactions in my dashboard history, but the email confirmation does not make it to email. Also, im's are not making it to email, nor are any messages regarding inventory/notecard offers.  Prior to yesterday's deploy, this type of communication made it to my email without problem.  The sim is GMI Tenanye 107/99/22.

 

Edited - Just restarted the sim and it seems that communications are back online.  Closed the JIRA/Bug Report.

To test the stability of SSB servers I took a short walk this morning.  I began in Osbourne Walk and moved North to Predrow which is the nearest Le Tigre server. Crossing over between the adjacent main server to there proved difficult and I crashed, however, log in was relatively easy though there were a few rezzing problems and I had to resort to rebake. Lag was noticeable but moderate, but movement was possible and got better later.  

I then tried to port out and ports back to Osbourne Walk failed repeatedly or led to crashes, so I walked to the next server and amazingly movement from Predrow to it was easier. Finally I found a second SSB server at Kama Pass and once I had rezzed, which by the way was much easier ported back to Predrow with no problems at all, so apparently Ports between SSB servers may not have the problems experienced with other servers though that bears more testing before we can be certain.  I then again tried to port back to Osbourne Walk and angain failed but was able to port to Turnip another Blue Steel sim so am not sure if the port problem is local or more general.

Other things I noticed during testing was that porting from non SSB servers seemed to put a heavy burden on the targeted SSB server and often was accompanied by heavy Packet Loss but that porting between SSB servers seemed to be smooth and efficient.  Unfortunately I did not find any SSB servers adjacent to each other so am not sure what border crossing are like between them but am optimistic given the ease of the ports.

One other thing I have noticed is that since preparations began a few weeks ago for SSB Allocated Memory to most sims has gone up subtantially as has packet loss, though ironically FPS and Ping Sim have for the most part improved.

I hope these first impressions are of some use and that they will help smooth the transition to SSB for at this point Stability and a smoothly working grid is vital.  By the way I was using the 4.42 Firestorm viewer.

Sim crossing certainly seems worse at the meoment. although I'm seeing signs of a poor interenet connection, these problems my not be down to anything LL can do anything about.

I cannot honestly point a finger at the new baking system.

Tussock and Lanestris are adjacent LeTigre sims. I'm seeing (sample size = 1) that crossings between them are practically seamless, but crossings back and forth with non-LeTigre sims are as variable as always. (In my experience, however, "practically seamless" is also within that variance, so there may or may not be improvement.)

So far, ssa seems to be completely broken, avatars either stay gray or blurry, some don't show up at all ( I only see their name tag) , I even saw clouded avatars for 10+ minutes, I get 95+% fps drops and even system freezes on le tigre regions. Tested with various viewers; SecondLife V 3.6.1, Kokua V 3.6.1, Firestorm 4.4.2, Singularity 1.8.0, all act the same, and even when I tp back from a le tigre region to a release channel region, it takes  more than a minute for my fps to recover from 6 to 90.

Oh thank you for that recommendation for the LeTigre InfoHub. I did a comparison of InfoHub arrivals in a few non-LeTigre Regions and this InfoHub. Here are my observations.

On arrival, grey avatar placeholders showed immediately and about 1/2 of the 17 avatars there colored up within 10 or so seconds for me, The reminder colored up within 25 seconds. Watching new arrivals was interesting, the grey avatar place holder showed up immediately and prim and texturing rendering occurred usually with the skin & avatar layer clothing rendered 1st then in no particular order, attached prims, sculpties & mesh afterwards. Pretty much without fail new arrivals were rendered within 20 seconds which is a huge increase in performance from my usual InfoHub POV experience.

As expected, my Client Performance indicator started to flash yellow and red as the number of avatars rose to over 25 during my stay here.

As a comparison I visited the Murray InfoHub:

With only 3 avatars here it took...... 60+ seconds for the 2 avatars to fully  render for me.  The grey avatar place holders did appear immediately which is a nice improvement in the pre SAA turned-up server/viewer code.

With only 11 avatars here it took...... 30+ seconds for the 6 avatars located close to me to fully render for me.  The grey avatar place holders did appear immediately. This region is in a different RC Project so these performance numbers may be affected by that project code base.

11 avatars were on this InfoHub. This is a region with a very old code base on it and Ta Da - I experienced lots of white cloud avatars for over 3 minutes. After that time, only about 1/2 of the avatars rendered for me so I ended my visit there.

As you can see I'm using the current SL Viewer viewer so to be sure the server code base is very important in supporting the instant display of the grey avatar place-holder avatars.

I'll just add my two penn'orth here.

I'm using Firestorm 4.4.2, I have a VM cable connection, an Intel i7 processor and an nVidia GTX580GPU.

 

So far on Wirtz and Bulgogi sims, both LeTigre RC channel, so SSA enabled, I see avatar rezzing different, maybe slightly faster, certainly clothing changes faster, with none of the old "double rez" baking.

Now, on the first TP to Wirtz, it did seem that my viewer (cache?) took a while (a few seconds) to adapt to the new baking code, and while textures are nice and sharp I do see an FPS hit of about 35% from a non-SSA Main Server sim.

It also takes a while (15-20sec) for the viewer to re-adapt to non-SSA code once I TP back to a Main Server sim, but I see no lasting issues.

So my conclusion, based purely on my own experience is that SSA is working, maybe not quite as well as LL hoped, but I'd say it is pretty close. :smileyhappy:

There is one major disappointment and that is that the Interest List issue of invisible, ie non rendered prims is still with us.

Andrew when is this issue going to be solved, I understood that the latest viewer code had it licked?

Yes it is interesting that the ready for SSA deployment Main Channel regions already are receiving a small performance boost.. I'm attributing that performance increase to the preparatory updates to the server code that have been going on for the past several weeks.

Clearly there is some great underlying updates in that server code as demonstrated by my visit to Iris which seemed to have some very old Server Code operating on it.

I went to Nelsiona and observed people arriving.

At first I didn't spot much of an improvement, but then I started counting to see how long it took for someone to fully rez, most avatars rezzed fully between 5 and 15 seconds, even if a bunch of them arrived at the same time.

And no fuzzy textures anywhere.

When i returned to 1920s Berlin, one single avatar took more then 40 seconds to rez.

So yes, I did notice an improvement and can't wait for it to come to 1920s Berlin.


Any idea when that may be?

It sounds like your connection/modem don't handle SL's HTTP system well. I've recently moved from somewhere with a decent internet connection to one with a terrible one and the connection/modem make a huge difference. Do you have HTTP textures on or off, and what's your "MeshMaxConcurrentRequests" at?  You need HTTP textures on for decent performance with SSA, and if you've got your mesh requests turned up you're actually shooting yourself in the foot because the servers are sending too much information at once and the requests have to keep retrying. I used to have issues of the prolonged drop in framerate at mesh-heavy areas on my bad connection but it went away by turning down my mesh requests.

When I turn http textures on on ssa enabled regions , I get fps below 1 and sometimes my whole viewer or even the whole system freezes, so I cannot use http get textures at all on ssa enabled regions My fps on ssa enabled regions with http textures turned off I get 4-7 fps.

This does not occur on non ssa enabled regions with HTTP get textures turned on, seems the ssa servers send out too many textures too fast with HTTP textures enabled.

My connections vary, one is 32 Gbit/S cable on a Cisco EPC 3212 cable router and it has been working  very well for me so far for quite a while and it still does on non ssa regions.

The other connection  is 16 mBit/S ADSL using a Fritz Box 7170 router and it gives me the same issues as my cable connection on ssa enabled regions.

Seems I have to say good bye to SL soon due to 'progress' that my modern and rather powerful  hardware  cannot handle.
