Recently, about the time LL was launching the new update to the sims, facilitating server side baking, my PC's fans started gearing up to high speeds every time I either cam into something close, or cam around.  This is an HP desktop not quite 2 years old. Windows 7 64 bit, AMD Phenom II X6 Processor, 8.0 GB, AMD Radeon HD 6570 graphics card.

I am using the latest version of Firestorm, graphics set on Medium, draw distance below 100. I recently took the box out, opened and vacuumed all the dust out everything, and the problem still continues.

I open Specy and watch my mother board and CPU hit upwards of 150 deg F. and soon after the fans start revving. I'm a bit worried I am damaging the mother board or CPU from being in SL. Or it's already damaged.

Anyway, any advice or input would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

First, welcome to the gaming world. Heat is our enemy! 65c is getting pretty warm but without exact specs on your processor it's difficult to say what harm can be caused. The HP's I saw similar to your description run the 1045 but you could have the 1055.

Being a former HP user I may know what could be happening. From images I saw for your possible machine (Pavillion Elite) it uses a heat sink and fan combo. My old comp used a similar set up. Vacuuming won't help. What I had to do was remove the fan and use compressed air to clean out between the heat sink fins. I was surprised at the buildup and it worked great keeping it clean.

HP's are known to run hot. IMO this is due more to the tight constraints of the case itself and lack of proper ventilation. Also an attributing factor is your graphics card. No offense intended but it is a cheap solution to integrated graphics and not  a gaming card. It also runs very hot, so combined with the CPU and poor ventilation they typically run hot. Sadly it is too late to get a proper machine for SL and your options for upgrades are limited by the case size.

I run the 1100t black edition with core temps of around 30c using a liquid cooling system. My gpu temps run in the high 30's on ultra settings in a dense sim. I chose the gigabyte 670 windforce primarily for its heat removal capabilities.

yep all the time, i run SL on a Lappy, middle of the range,i have found a useful gadget that sits underneath the laptop, that has 3 mini fans, powered from a USB point, helps to cool it down. also another useful tool is a small program called speccy, which on analysis tells you the core temp of your CPU/motherboard,i think its freebie

Yes.  My HP laptop has been overheating.  It's has me crashing constantly inworld. But, I'm pretty sure my fan is going out, as it makes a terrible noise upon start-up, and while running.   I've never used this machine on my lap, but have it propped up and ventilated on my desk.  But, the heat level gets so high, that it's burning hot to the touch, and that's when I know to turn it off, or else I get a hard crash.  (if inworld)

For just general online purposes, it still seems to do fine, but the second I fire up my SL viewer, I can hear the grinding sound and the heat escalates quickly.  This laptop is not new though, so I'm probably just going to have to buy a new computer.  (currently, I can also use my even older desktop inworld, but it's sloooow, and graphics are poor with that option)

Here's what my SL *viewer says about my HP laptop:

CPU: AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-70 (2000 MHz)
Memory: 2814 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit Service Pack 2 (Build 6002)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 8200M G/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.15.0011.8644
OpenGL Version: 3.0.0

As you can see, I use a plethora of tools. :matte-motes-agape: Thank you for the recommendation. I dl'ed it and will check it out.

Just know that gpu`s are built to operate at high temps, ofcourse the cooler they are the better, but don`t be scared if you see an 80c

Yes, I'm well aware of that :matte-motes-wink: One of my previous cards was a XFX GeForce 9800GT+ Black Edition. It ran at temps of 59-64c when using ultra settings back in the day. It's still a very capable card that can run SL today in the high setting range but shadows do diminish the FPS.

Yes, My GPU (nVidea GTX 560ti) is running way hot after Firestorm 4.2.2 was installed. The GPU is 62° C at idle and that is 18° C  hotter than normal. In world its a few degrees C hotter than normal. I know its related to the new release of Firestorm because I updated to the latest nVidea drivers and after they installed idle temps were running 47° which is about normal. I then launched Firestorm and was in world for a frew hours. After exiting SL my GPU only went down about 5° C. Not good. I know some people experience thermal shutdown of their PC too.  My CPU seems only slightly hotter. Its the GPU I am concerned about. I use CPUID HWMonitor to check. There's definately an issue with Firestorm 4.2.2 or this is a result of the server side baking. Either way I'm not happy about it.

You should check that all the heatsinks and fans are properly connected to your cpu and gpu chips. Maybe something has come loose. Also, you should use an air blower of some sort because a vacuum can cause static electricity.

The video card itselff seems fine. The cause is the server side baking and Firestorm 4.2.2. Still overheats and gets even hotter than it used to. Two versions ago of Firestorm was fine.

I don't have a clue what's causing the symptoms you describe, but I do have a couple of comments. I'm assuming it's just a typo on your part, but the current version of Firestorm is 4.4.2, not 4.2.2. You've typed it that way two times so I thought it worth mentioning.  4.4.2 is the version that supports server side baking.

If you do have 4.4.2, as  I suspect, I can only say I switched a month ago and have had zero issues related to system performance. It's possible there's some sort of compatibility/conflict issue that has to do with just your particular GPU, but if it was a generally seen issue I am sure it would have been widely reported in the forum. That hasn't happened.

If I were you, I would try to get this dialog going with the Firestorm support group inworld. For one thing there are probably more active contributors in that group than in the GD Forum; for another all of them (one would guess) are using Firestorm. That's definitely NOT the case in the Forum.

Others have covered the heat thing but there are a couple of things you can try.

Under the Advanced menu, Debug settings, find "MaxFPS".  I can't think of any reason for my GPU to try to display more than 30 fps and when it does, it runs hotter and consumes more power and makes more noise!

The default setting is -1, unlimited.

The second value will slightly impact performance so try different values but look for "YieldTime". This will give up processing time and stop SL from hogging the CPU and running that at max all the time.  Suggested values are in the range 20ms to 100ms.  The larger the value, the more impacted by the setting that SL will be but even small values help and can significantly reduce the CPU load and let it run a lot cooler.

I have a laptop that used to run a store model and if I didn't do the YieldTime, the keyboard could reach 70 degrees C and that's just unpleasant to touch.  By using the above, the laptop sits quietly and runs cool all day.

I've played SL for a long time, like almost 2 years now, & I've noticed the fans on my desktop rev away like a jet engine, when I'm on SL, but, I never knew it was being overheated. This desktop is old, & SL barely works on it anyhow. I lag & crash constantly. I recently, a few weeks ago, got a new laptop. The first one I have ever had. SL works good on it, but, this is when, & how, I noticed the overheating. PLUS I can have a full charged battery, highest amount 6 hours, & it'll go from 100% battery, to 14% in a few minutes, whrn I log on SL. & it heats to upwards of 80-90 degrees F.I have to keep it plugged in to even be on SL.

HOWEVER I can use other programs, & the internet browsers, with webd browser based 3D gaames, like SL, all day, & never have overheating, or to plug my charger in. I've also saw MANY other people with this issue! I feel like this, the lag, & crashing, & other issues, could be solved if LL made SL browser based! Then it'd work on ANY computer! Old or new! They'd have more users & make more money. Cause not all of us can run out & update a comp with new parts, or buy a new comp. I could then use SL again on my desktop. I have tried firestorm & the standard viewer.

After the last 3 updates firestorm has become unuseable on my comps, & standard viewer is almost unuseable on my desktop. I'd prefer to use my desktop for SL, because it's just easier for me, but, tese issues make that hard to even want to log on, on either. A family memember said I should just stop playing SL, altogether, since it could damage my comps, or make me loose them, but, I love playing it. I have A LOT of friends on there, a family, etc. & I'd miss them all very very much.

LL please make SL browser based?! I'm sure ALOT of users will thank you!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Have tried all settings suggestions, on both comps, still overheating lappy, & crashing/lagging desktop!

Read my post about the two settings that can immediately help.

SL doesn't work like other games which are highly optimised and they did have a browser test a while back but LL have no interest in SL anymore. It's a cash cow to fund their iPad etch-a-sketch games. Accept it and move on.

Plus just making it "browser based" doesn't automatically make it run on anything, it still depends on the underlying plug in engine.

This made me lol.

Good luck with your... 'suggestion'. You might, though, want to learn anything at all about computers, before talking to LL to get this thing implemented.
