my boyfriend put out a couch in my linden home and it disappeared. Its not in his inventory.

How can he get his item back if it was lost in my Linden home

There are many possibilities, so it's difficult to guess which one is correct.

1. If he rezzed the couch and it disappeared some time later, it might have been returned to his Lost & Found folder.

2. If it's a mesh couch, it may have rezzed incompletely, so it's there but not visible.  Try right-clicking where it ought to be, or try toggling into wireframe mode and out with CTRL + Shift + R.

3. It may have rezzed, but not where he meant to rez it.  This happens to me all the time, especially if there's some transparent object between me and the target location.  Search the area to see if it's around.

4. The sim's servers may have been confused about where the couch was supposed to appear.  This isn't common, but it happens occasionally. When it does, the default location is at the sim's extreme SW corner, location <0.0,0.0,0.0>, also known as the garbage collector.  Go look.
