As Llazarus has pointed out above, our friend Awe doesn't do anything anymore, apart from occasionally counting his movie royalties.

So what do you do?  I'm just a noob and don't know how to build or anything like that. Is there a job or anything you can do on here that pays?

Thanks

DJs in SL make fairly good money depending on the club the work. MOst DJs Dj for many clubs. I have been working in SL for a year and 4 months. I save my money and don't spend on much. So invest wisley and save you can make real money in SL

Are you a DJ?  I have been DJ'ing in SL since 2007.  Some months I worked several clubs.  For the past few years, I have worked for one club.  I doubt that any DJ in SL survives in RL on the L$ they make inworld.  There are some DJs who also DJ in RL.  They would be the first to say that they would never give up their RL gigs to 'survive' on what they make inworld.  Most clubs do not pay DJs.  We are paid in tips, and many times the club takes a cut of those.

I DJ for the lols.  Period.

I know a few DJs and most tend to work for multiple clubs. Most also make decent money each set. Sure there are slow times but the good outwieghs the bad when you work for more then one club.

I know a few DJs and they all work for multiple club

Normally, I suggest  Amazon's Mechanical Turk but I haven't heard anyone using it. (I made $0.10 on it!)

Now, I suggest sites like Taskrabbit or similar to do odd jobs.

Making money in SL requires a lot of hustle and sometimes feels like real work. I would try being a home decorator because so many houses in SL are set up terribly (forum people excluded).

Just one reminder here: if you are going to reopen a four year old thread about making money in SL, keep in mind that all the early posts here are likely to be way outdated and a bit misleading today.

As everyone else has pointed out, coming to SL with the sole interest of making money is a fool's dream. Very, very few people make anything in SL, and fewer than that make anything more than a few dollars a month. The days of making a living off of SL ended years ago. It's still pretty healthy and you can make some money here and there, but I would never tell someone that they can expect to leave their day job. You would have to be extremely talented, hard working, and very luck in order to have any hope of making money.

Most people in business in SL are doing it for fun. The prevailing discussion about running a business is to never expect it to pay for itself. That's not to say that you can't have money and be successful, but you would be a fool to come here with dollar signs in your eyes.

I think it was always hype.

In July 2007, while SL was at its peak, 145 people made more than 5000$ here and 865 people made more than 1000$. (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=3527537&page=1)

In December 2006, only 17,000 SL users had a positive cashflow at all. (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/internet/social-networking/information/second-life-job.htm)

As so often before, (and later), it was the few success stories that caught the news' interest and the many failures were ignored.

That being said, unless you have very expensive tastes you can still make enough Lindens to cover your inworld expenses - enough to "pitch a tent in a virtual world" and save up for a few special items.

I don't know any statistics, but I do know that a lot of people are earning a living here, many a very good living, some a fortune.

From my experience, you can make money in SL same as you can make it in real life - if you work hard. But there are few problems...

In real life, you can make money (by money I mean something to pay bills, food, rent etc.) by doing a variety of no-skill or low-skill jobs like sell tickets or be a cashier or a cleaning lady, while in SL you need to have good skills in just a few fields to earn the same amount of money as an average cleaning lady. If you want to earn more you'll need excellent skills.

A great thing about earning money in SL is that the money comes to you even when you're sleeping, the money flows all the time and you can just count it up and exchange for real dollars but in order to do this you will have to become amazing creator, who knows many people, who works on marketing at least one hour per day, who does tons of other things.

Also, there needs to be some kind of a talent, if you're just an average person who has no idea about being talented or not then most likely it will be hard for you to earn some significant amount of money.

Marketing is the key because the big challenge for any new entrepeneur in Second Life is to be noticed at all in an over-saturated and fractured market. It is possible to build your reputation simply by delivering good quality over and over again. But that takes years - one good content creator mentioned it had taken her ten years - and there's no guarantee.

Going to go back 10 plus years here, there was money to make here.  I was in the Casino/Gambling/Bookie business here.  From 2004 to early 2007, I was making a killing here.  In the tune $250k RL.  Then the SL boom hit and all the success stories on the news.  Then the US Government stuck their nose in our business here on SL and away went the real gambling.   Yeah, I was super p****d over and left SL for a little while.  But from making clothing, avatar RLV attachments, and DJ'ing.  My SL pays for itself.   But before the SAM4 auto DJ (Jukebox) program came along.   REAL DJ's were getting paid here and SL club scene was a lot funnier back 8 to 10 years ago than it is now.

Don't give up your real job. Expecting you will make anything more than making a bit of extra safety or play money is delusional.

They've just hiked up the fees to process credit, they're making millions from land fees so they'll have some lame excuse about paying somebody to sleep in a chair all day while the system processes your credit.   And be sure to have a receipt with your full name and residential address with at least two forms of photo ID. You'll need that for the joy of receiving the automated Email that informs you, they have just seized your money and you must hand all those items over or you'll never see your money again.  Then set your alarm for some crazy hour to get hold of chat support, so you can be told to lay on the ground with your arms spread and do as you are instructed! Because you are the criminal here.  Then your money will arrive, while you can rest assured that all your personal details are shared with a multitude of third parties, including finding it's way to people that want to find you and saw you up, stuff you in a barrel and bury it under that new bit of highway being built.

Welcome to Second Life. "I love my work here......"

Dura let me point out THE IRS is requiring the lab to collect information from us residents, it's not LL's call.  and the processing fee is justified by them actually having somebody sit and process and watch transactions, rather than it be automated where fraud and money laundering can happen easily and yes that is why part of the reason we have what we do right now and why the IRS stepped in.   sorry but this is how it will be from now on.

There's another thread for dealing with this.

LL obviously thought IRS was pronounced Patriot Act and Homeland Security Act. By the time they got to me it was shortened to Applicable Law. Somewhere in between there it had been IRS.  This IRS must be an organization shrouded in great secrecy, because LL wont let on that IRS is behind it all.   It should be an easy thread to find.

This one was brought back twice, it died in Oct 2013, and was resurrected in March 2015, died again in October of that same year, only to be resurrected a second time in November of 2016. Though it could be argued that November attempt was a failure since it was another 6 months before the next post.

If you have 3D modelling skills or can code in LSL and do scripting, you can likely make some decent money. The same if you can sing decently, you can do live shows and charge a fair amount for doing it. Otherwise it's mostly not going to pay as well as almost any RL job. I DJ and make enough to cover my inworld expenses without having to buy L$. Even if I could get a gig every day it wouldn't be enough to live on. To put a number on it, on a very good day I might bring in 2000-3000L for a 2 hour set. They aren't all good days though and often it's closer to 1000L. or about $2/hour real money. I mostly do it for fun though since the place I DJ at are places I know most of the regulars and get to chat with them and joke around on the mic. I certainly don't make enough that it would be worth doing if I didn't have fun with it.

Do as you're told. Take the advice that always come from these forums.

If anything bad happens, just roll over and die. Close your eyes and accept that's just the way it is.

Let them trample all over you, because that's the only way to creating a truly meaningful life.

I have never heard anyone giving this advice, Lots of people come on here asking about some quick magical way to be rolling in Lindens without really doing anything to get them, and they are told there is no such thing, if you want to be rolling in Lindens you are going to have to work to get them. Being told to roll up your sleeves and get busy, is not the same as being told to roll over and die.
