i get an error message that says failed to find clothing named new shirt in database

Welcome to Second Life Answers, moya

It may be that your inventory just has failed to fully load.  Relog, but change your start login location to Furball (this is just a quiet empty waterland sim with minimal lag), see if your inventory loads fully.  If it does not, then clear cache and try again.
