0 Rolig Loon Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 All we can do is refer you to the Linden Lab press release about the change in policy >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Featured-News/Updated-Second-Life-Terms-of-Service/ba-p/1996185 . The effective change in operations is apparently that Linden Lab is no longer offering Third Party Exchanges the use of a Risk API. That means that those exchanges will have no way of telling whether a person who is trying to buy L$ is a good credit risk. It eliminates the risk for Linden Lab, while making it much riskier for the Third Party Exchanges. It will mean that those exchanges will find it harder to serve as money laundering operations. It also means that if you buy L$ from a Third Party Exchange, you will have no way of knowing whether they are reliable either. The only safe alternative is the Lindex. 1
0 Marigold Devin Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 It is frustrating. Many people are frustrated, and there are several threads currently running on the forums already, with people voicing their frustrations. We all get comfortable using Second Life the way that is easiest for us, and sometimes it seems Linden Lab change things just to be difficult, but as Rolig says, their decision to use LindeX only should minimise the risk of money laundering. Unfortunately, all of our accounts are in jeopardy when criminals find a way to commit acts of fraud, and I don't think Linden Lab have taken this decision lightly. Please don't make this the reason why you leave Second Life. See if there is an alternative way to manage your account and how it is financed.
0 Innula Zenovka Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I don't know that money laundering is such an issue; our EU money laundering regulations are certainly comparable to the US ones, and I can't imagine that any of the established third party exchanges are involved in anything underhand (or that they would have got away with it for very long if they were). I think this more LL covering their backs -- with the new US regulations on virtual currencies it makes sense, in principle, for LL to distance themselves as far as possible from any virtual currency exchange they don't control, even though they may not, in practice, have any doubts about a particular exchange's reliability and probity. 1
0 Rolig Loon Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 It's probably more complex than you or I imagine, not being lawyers. I know that money laundering is a concern for LL. It's one of the reasons why newbies have trading limits -- to discourage moving large amounts of cash through the Lindex with temporary accounts. To the extent that residents have been able to get around those limits by trading through Third Party exchanges, it has been a problem. How big, only LL knows. I think you're basically right that this is a CYA move by the Lab. It protects them from liability if their Risk API wasn't always flagging bad accounts reliably. More importantly, it strengthens their argument that L$ are not money but in-world tokens. As you point out, that can get them out of the crosshairs of politicians who are aiming at virtual currency issues. In any case, it's an inconvenience -- and more-- for many SL residents, but probably a serious survival tactic for LL. 1
0 Alexa Broome Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I am on SL since 2007 and I am by thinking about to leave too. It is understandable that LL always make SL more bad. I dont want have to many Lindens of my account, all have heard from griefers or scripts that takes all your money and this happens since I use SL 2 times and NEVER i had become 1l back from the cheaters that stolen my money. And I had send all Copys and Messages to LL about!!!!!!! So I have do most of my money to virwox and when i needed money i taked money back to SL for to use. I am very mad about. When I use virwox then of my own risk and when i pay from virwox to paypal i have MY OWN MONEY in 1min of my paypal account. Now i have change my money with Lindens not great changer..... 3-5 days i have to wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so they have good time to make with MY OWN MONEY the money from themself. I stay as premiummember till my membership is done then I have in my mind to leave. I DONT like the way what LL does with the Residents.
0 Alexa Broome Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I need say something that is important to say: I want save my money from the thiefs around SL that I am sure I dont loss..... what I do: I put to virwox most of my money and when i need i take some money back to SL. easy. wihout any costs I loss NOTHING and it works verysuperfast. so what I do now....... that what LL order to us....... use lindeX........ and how it works? ah yes.... I have for that I can save my money from thiefs change my lindens to USD ...... when I need money I have to change back to LL and so i loss from my OWN money and LL get rich when I think how many peoples need to do this now. It would be FAIR when LL give us the order to use LindeX when LL make a different for put LL of the LindeX for SAVE MY OWN MONEY...... I have not say all but better I dont say all.
0 rouma Pinion Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I'm frustrated . I also think of leaving SL after 6 years ( no i'm not a premium but i spent about 35€/month for the last 4 years on SL ) . I used Virwox , never had any problems with exchange. I bought lindens and got them fast and well didn't have to transfer it to my avatar all at once . And now . i transfered 50$usa yesterday hoping to get lindens but no... i have to wait to buy lindens since i can't use my balance .. So does it mean that when i'll get my lindens i'll have to transfer it to an alt ( which will be "my bank") ? I saw a lot in 6 years but that isn't the best decision Linden Labs did for us ( RL people playing and spending RL money)
