How can I open mesh objects?

I'm trying to open a boxed object which seems to be a mesh. I'm right-clicking the object and then drop, the usual way to open a box. But when I do, I get a notification that says "you can't drop mesh attachments. Detach to inventory and then rez in world." And I'm not getting how to rez in world at all. I detach it back into my inventory, and that's as far as I can get

You need to be in an area where you have rez rights. Any sandbox will do. Use SEARCH to find public sandboxes.

Find the item in inventory. Drag it to the ground. Then you should be able to open it.

To "rez" an object in world, simply drag it from your inventory and drop it on the ground.  You must be in an area that allows you to do this...your own land, or a public sandbox, are two good choices. 

This, by the way, is how you SHOULD bring objects into the world, not attaching them and then dropping them from your avatar.  This can cause problems.
