Your Internet connection might be A+ for many things like e-mail, web browsing, and games like WoW but still not dependable enough for Second Life, which requires a steady, continuous stream of data all the time.  It's not all about bandwidth.  It's about packet loss, ping time, and consistency.

All of that to one side ....

The "Waiting for Region Handshake" message occurs when the Second Life Viewer does not receive an acknowledgement from the server.  The usual cause of this error is a firewall blocking UDP packets. Reconfigure your firewall to resolve this problem.

For information on how to configure firewalls, see: Using Second Life with a firewall.

Some Antivirus routines will also interfere with Second Life connections.  Norton is particularly notorious.   See http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/antivirus_whitelisting

You say you are "not using a firewall".

Just to start, that's very unwise.

But you could very well be using a firewall and not know it.  If you have a router, internet modem, or wireless access point, it most likely has a hardware firewall, also known as a NAT firewall, installed.  This firewall needs the same permissions that a software firewall, such as the one provided with Windows or the ones that come with your antivirus program, have to have to let Second Life work.  See the users manual (probably online) for your specific device.

You say there have been no changes to your computer, but there might have been some without you noticing them.  Windows and many other programs update themselves automatically.

hi, cant work out on how to post so doing it this way, having same problem with handshake crap and every answer i come across is some firewall blocking UDP packets, thing is my pc is for pure gaming only, router firewall = OFF, windows firewall  = OFF, any type of restriction = OFF, only use microsoft security essentials on pc but still get the handshake problem, also had hub in modem only mode still exact same dam problem, so what else can be what you say blocking udp packet flow

You post a question by typing it in the big, prominently marked box at the top of the page, where it says "Ask A Question", and then clicking the button that says "Post a Question".

Although your Microsoft Security essentials are a weak substitute for a real security system on your computer, they may well be your problem. If you are on a college campus or in a corporate setting, you may also be behind a system firewall that your IT department uses to protect the system. And, as Lindal pointed out, your anti-virus program can also block unwanted access to your computer. Look at each of those possibilities and study the links provided in this thread.

thanks for reply, not on a campus or anything like that just a single person at home directly connected to hub in modem mode, security essentials removed but exact same problem, Region handshake error, port forward port checker says port open but i just cannot connect. did a drive backup, formatted pc installed drivers and necessary software and still exact same problem, why is this still happening

That is extremely weird and I admit to not having a clue about what to try other than what you already have. The only other thing that I can imagine is your anti-virus software, which can also block Internet access incorrectly sometimes, but I'm sure that you checked that when you put exceptions in your firewall.

hi, i have no firewall, no antivirus program, straight forward windows updates updated and SL installed, ports i try are definitely open but still the handshake error, i give up before i can even try the dam game

Wow! No firewall and no AV? That's living dangerously.

Well you have me stumped. I can't think of any good reason why you get a handshake error if you have absolutely no security barriers in your system. Sorry.
