A "body thing"?  Do you mean a shape?  If so,

1. Find the shape in your inventory.

2. Right click on it.

3. Select "Wear".

The new shape will replace the shape you are currently wearing.

Oh, I see.   Thank you for adding that clarification, Happy. You are wearing a "modesty skin".  Linden Lab issues those to all new avatars as a way to protect underage members from being shocked by their naked bodies.  There are a few non-modesty skins in the Library >> Clothing folder way at the bottom of your inventory.  You'll have to just try a few on until you find one that suits you.  If you want to go and buy yourself a skin that fits your self-image better than the ones in your inventory, here are few things to think about:

1. It's usually better to buy skins from in-world shops instead of buying on Marketplace, because you'll often have a better selection and will be able to try demos right there.  Wear a bikini when you go shopping, or plan on having a safe, quiet place to try on demos later.

2. Never buy a skin without trying a demo first -- especially if you decide to buy in Marketplace. Skins look very different on a model than they will look on you.  Until you can see the skin on your own body, you don't know what you are buying.

3. Skin is only part of what you see when you look at an av.  Shape makes a lot of difference.  It's a very smart idea to make (or buy) a shape that you like first and then start looking for skins.  Otherwise, you might decide too late that your nose is the wrong size or your eyes are too close together.  When you adjust the shape later, your lovely new skin may look quite different.
