I downloaded the SL viewer onto my new laptop but I see only a blank, white screen.  When I minimize this screen and then maximize, the only change is that it's now a blank, black screen.  I cannot close the window with the red X so I must ctrl alt delete to close the program.  Once I open the task manager, the proper login screen is displayed but I'm unable to interact with it.  Any suggestions?

More info:  Thank you for your help so far!  I'm actually still using Windows 7 on an HP Envy17 and I don't know very much about it but I had my bf walk me through choosing the specs as we "built" it on the HP website.  What other information can I provide that will help people help me with my issue?  :)

Have a look here: http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Technical/Plain-white-SL-log-in-screen-after-graphics-driver-update/qaq-p/1485061

it is possibly a driver issue. There are several threads on this forum about the same issue.

Even if the computer is new, the drivers can be several month old. or older depending on when the machine was 'build'.
So it is most likely that you need to update your driver to the latest version.

A further fix could be to change your windows Theme to Aero. or to classic (depending on your OS version).

Another reason could be that your graphic card is not supported for SL. But unfortunately you forgot to tell us the specs of your new computer - so have a look at the requirements:http://secondlife.com/support/system-requirements/

PS: in case you want to update, and add your system specifications. Please choose 'edit' on your post ( do not start a new thread) =)

Melizza,

I'm assuming you are on a brand spanking new Windows 8 Lappy. Remember, when you buy these they are 6 months behind in stability and bug fixes...

Please do this:

1) Manually apply ALL the Required and Important patches for Windows 8 from Microsoft. A new Win 8 PC needs 4-5 iterations of this to get them all. The easiest way to do this is to:

   a) Enter Desktop Mode    b) Launch Internet Explorer    c) Right-click on the options area of the Browser and turn on Menu & Status Bar [and any other of the old standards you like]    d) Tools / Windows Update.    e) Select the CUSTOM button so you can monitor and select the downloaded options to install    e) Repeat until all are DL's and installed

Note: Don't install the Bing Desktop. Also, don;t install any Windows Live components unless you have an email account with Microsoft.

2) Identify the Video / Graphics system in your PC and get the drivers direct from the Video System manufacturer.

3) Try SL again using the official version from Linden Lab. [be sure to do a clean install

Here is the Windows 8 Manual System File cleanup procedure since it's not in the procedure above.

Windows 8

  1. Using File Explorer -> Libraries / Computer / ( C: ) / Users / <username>
  2. Press the Continue button to get permission to obtain permanent permission edit this directory.
  3. From the View drop-down menu option select Options & Change Folder & Search Options
  4. Select the View Tab
  5. Under the Hidden Files and  Folders options click on the - O Show hidden files, folders & Drives radio button
  6. Push the Apply Button then the OK button.
  7. Open C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local and delete the contents of your Temp folder and the SecondLife folder.
  8. Uninstall Second Life using the Programs and Features tool in the Windows Control Panel.
  9. Download and install the latest release of the Second Life Viewer from http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/.

Let us know if this does the trick!
