I am a premium member and I just rented some land from a landowner:  my question is can I pay the per month amount to LLs instead of paying rent to the landowner?

Nope. If you want to pay tier directly to LL, you have to buy mainland. There are pros (and cons) to both methods, but you can't circumvent the landowner when you're renting. You pay them, they pay LL.

ETA: The main attraction of renting land is that you can rent land without having to be a Premium member, whereas you can't own mainland without being Premium. If you're already Premium, you might as well just buy a mainland plot; it's probably cheaper. Not that there aren't other pros of renting.
