Question

Posted

I started playing SL again after a long break during which I moved and changed ISP. I've been getting disconnected every 10-15 minutes since then. After trying everything I could find on the internet, I called my ISP and was told my connection was probably too slow to handle SL...

I'm considering changing for a higher speed connection but I'm not sure which one I should pick... Right now, I have a DSL connection with download speed up to 6 Mbps.

Edit: I tried rebooting my router already, the only things that have been suggested to me that I have not tried yet is changing my router and updating its firmware(which I cannot do without the ISP's authorization, I just found out...)... I already measured my speed, too, it was at 4.95mbps.

When I am out in the remote tropical jungle (no joke) I run SL on speeds up to 3mbps and not using a landline connection and it works ok. I don't keep getting disconnected. I know it's not ideal but it is ok. I think you maybe should see what others suggest, but speed isn't an issue for me and your speed is much better.

If that really IS your download speed, you're fine.  Don't take the ISP's word for it, though.  When they sell you 6Mb service, all they are saying is that the maximum you will get is 6Mb/sec.  Measure your real download speed at http://speedtest.net/ .

If you are gettinbg disconnected frequently, consider the possibility that your router needs rebooting (simple) or replacing (also simple, but mildly expensive).  To reboot the router, unplug it from the power for a few minutes while you go get a donut.  Come back, plug it in, and see if you get better luck.
