I was reading out about backing up all you own  in your inventory, when is SL and Firestorm going to provide us a backup

service simular to second inventory, to be able to have something that can be backed up and sorted on your own pc would be a life saver plus be so much easier sorting on your pc.

I know the tec is there for it to be able , so come SL and FStorm can we have this plz  BTW yes I know this would be ltd to

all your own creations and full perms.

Second Inventory only backs up thing that you yourself created.  It doesn't back up your entire inventory. Some viewers will do this too, they just take longer.

LL will never provide full inventory backup on  your hard drive as that would allow for a lot of mischief when it comes to permissions and IP rights.

There are open sim grids, called hyper grids,  that allow you to have the same inventory item on more than one grid, but you pay the creator a licesnse fee for each grid you want to use it on.  These don't back up on your hard drive, rather, a copy of each item resides on the asset server of the grids you bought licenses for.

I just tried to post something but it doesnt look like it worked so if this is a repeat, i apologize..

It looks like InWorldz has a Backup feature on their site so i dont understand why LL couldn't do the same. "" InWorldz says:

Self-Service Inventory Backup

On this page you can submit a request for an automated inventory backup file to be produced for download to your computer.""

It would help so much as i cannot afford the $38 for Second Inventory. I would like to take my store over to a couple of other grids but the long way is just tedious.

And therein lies a possible solution that would keep everyone happy - you want it OUT of SL, pay for it on the marketplace.  Like others though, I doubt this is functionality that LL will ever introduce.  After all, what's in it for them if all it does is make it easier to go to another provider.

What's in it for them?

Well lets see, the primary goal of inventory back up for the majority of users would be the ability to restore to a previous point in time, say before an accidental delete and purge of trash.  Or maybe against the occassional LL inventory loss.  I would suspect that the majority who want an ability to back up their inventory, are not wanting that to have an easy ability to take it to a different grid so it's mostly peace of mind.

Thus what the smart LL could do, would be to recognise this and offer a chargeable service to have an automated inventory backup, an enhanced service.  It could be a nice benefit of a premium account as an alternate option so, chargeable if not premium but included in premium automatically.

Don't expect it any time soon.

$38 isn't much if it allows you to set your store up on other grids. But I doubt that the $38 Second Inventory would allow you to do that anyway. According to a post above, the only things you can back up with Second Inventory are things you made yourself, and that includes all the textures on the things, not to mention any scripts that are in them. But it's the textures that cause me to doubt that Second Inventory would do what you'd like it to do

This all seems to be fighting the last war. At this point, there's nothing worth saving but Mesh, and all those models and imagemaps will already be on your hard drive (or cloud, or wherever you store your original work).

I would say this, though: because LL couldn't imagine making an in-world Mesh editor, the least they could have done was provide something like Mesh Studio so we could download the mesh geometry of prim assemblies and import to our favorite 3D modeling programs. (Nothing for or against that product or its creator; I'd just rather not have my critical path depend on perpetual access to some third-party website.)
